Google presents its new Nest Doorbell video intercom and Nest Cam security camera

Google extends its catalog of home products a little further with the launch of a new security camera (Nest Cam) and a video intercom (Nest Doorbell) . The two products will be available in Spain from August 24, although they can be reserved in the store of the North American company from today.

Both the Nest Cam and the Nest Doorbell are characterized by having a battery inside, which provides extra versatility . In the installation process, therefore, it is not essential to have a nearby outlet. However, if you want, it is also possible to connect both products to the electrical current permanently using an accessory that is sold separately.

These two products intelligently detect events that occur around them and, if necessary, momentarily record what is happening and notify members of the household. Specifically, they can identify the movement of people, animals or even vehicles. In the case of the Nest Doorbell, it also identifies packages.

Google ensures that the entire event identification process now occurs locally. That is to say: the analysis of the images does not take place on the company's servers. This has a clear benefit in terms of privacy, which is especially relevant considering that these products “monitor” the home we live in continuously.

In the event of a power failure or internet connection, these products are able to remain in operation thanks to their battery. In this scenario, what they do is record the events locally to later transmit them to the cloud. Google claims that both the Nest Cam and the Nest Doorbell are capable of recording locally up to an hour of events, which is equivalent, according to their estimates, to a week of notifications.

Both the Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell are compatible with Nest Aware

The two new Google products are compatible with Nest Aware , the subscription that the company offers to those who have Nest cameras in their homes. By default, Google's servers store up to three hours of video event history. With Nest Aware and Nest Aware Plus subscriptions, however, that number increases to 30 days and 60 days, respectively.

If Nest Aware Plus is contracted, in addition, Google's servers store everything that happens, 24 hours a day, up to a maximum of 10 days. That is to say: with the Plus variant, not only the relevant events that it detects are stored, but all the footage captured by the camera. For the latter, of course, it is essential that the camera is permanently connected to the electrical network.
