In recent weeks we have received Hisome Bug Zapper Light on trial, a system that combines two functions in a single accessory. It is in fact both a lantern – which can be placed on a flat surface pointing the light upwards or, by means of a removable hook, it can be hung upside down with the light beam facing the ground – and a system which promises to electrify mosquitoes by means of an electrified grid towards which annoying insects would be attracted by ultraviolet light.
How it's made
Hisome Bug Zapper Light, which from now on we will simply shorten to Hisome, is about the shape and size of an ostrich egg. However, one of the two ends is flat and this allows it to be placed with great stability on any flat surface with a regular profile. It is made entirely of polycarbonate whose structure seemed to us rather delicate.
The anti-mosquito function requires in fact that the external case is made with a frame that remotely recalls the arrangement of the bones of a rib cage: the material used is very light but also highly flexible, as ascertained by the pressure of our fingers in the act of squeezing the various “ribs” towards the center of the lamp.
Inside this small prison, a cylindrical lamp with ultraviolet light thickly covered by a metal frame is clearly visible. This forms the heart of the system, which is widely used by hundreds of commercially available mosquito repellent lamps.
The flattened base encloses a removable hook to thanks to which it is possible to hang Hisome from ropes, branches or sufficiently protruding areas while on the opposite side, well protected by a silicone surface, the lamp that enables the second function is located. The cover is opaque and this allows you not to be dazzled when looking at it directly when you turn it on at maximum power.
Two buttons with silicone cover are positioned along the perimeter of the flat base: one, represented by the design of a stylized mosquito, turns on the UV lamp and activates the passage of current along the metal grid while the other, with the classic symbol of the 'On / Off, turns the main lamp on and off, allowing the light intensity to be adjusted on three different levels by sequentially pressing it. In this area there is also the microUSB socket, well protected by a rubber cap, for recharging the internal battery.

How is it going
To understand if the mosquito repellent function really works, this reporter decided to take it with him to one of the places he loves and hates almost equally: his grandfather's country house. It is in fact here that most of his childhood was spent – and there are so many beautiful memories – and it is also here that family reunions are organized which, at this time of the year, include tasty grilled outdoors. But at the same time it is also the home of mosquitoes: several hectares of uncultivated land outside our property in summer turn into the favorite nest of this annoying insect. We told ourselves that if it didn't work here, it wouldn't work anywhere else.
So we planned several trials that involved using Hisome in different ways. That is, we hung the lamp on a rope below the veranda where we spend most of the time when we are outdoors and we alternated days in which we only turned on the UV lamp with others in which the lamp was also turned on at the same time. LED to illuminate the area below.
The lantern mode So, first of all as regards the lantern function, the lamp performs very well. The light at maximum brightness is powerful and allows you to adequately illuminate a small area of about one square meter. So it goes great in a tent or, in the use we have made of it, to be able to read a book on the rocking chair without hindrance. But the lantern function in our opinion is only secondary since, if you need an accessory of this type, on the market there are much more valid products and at a price sometimes even lower than that of Hisome. What matters most is whether the anti-mosquito mode does its duty. So the question we need to answer is: does it work?

The anti- mosquitoes We won't turn around too much. No, it doesn't work. Whether only the UV grid is switched on, whether it is activated in combination with the lamp, whether it is used at sunset or left on all night, in the presence of people or without anyone around. Fortunately, our excess of caution reminded us to also bring the ammonia stick with us to relieve post-puncture itching. Because in fact, there were several bites.
In almost ten days of rehearsals, the war bulletin declares us miserably defeated, with only one mosquito – even very small – captured by Hisome against the dozens and dozens of bites that show the ankles of this reporter and all those present who have feasted and rested on the veranda during the same period of stay.
Because it does not work But if this lamp does not work, we must not stop at the analysis of its design or the evaluation of the power used in the electrified grid. In fact, hundreds of people every summer buy specific products that use the same system – years ago this reporter even bought one similar to this one with rather unsatisfactory results – and who review the sizzles with satisfaction, perhaps also highlighting some catches actually completed. .
As the specialized publications have confirmed for decades, the lamps for electrocuting insects are completely ineffective. This is because female mosquitoes, which fill our bodies with bubbles, are attracted by the emission of carbon dioxide from our skin (but also by the amount of lactic acid present in the body and, it seems, especially by people with type 0 blood. The combination of these and other elements would determine the degree of attraction of mosquitoes).
It is in fact the male individuals, who sometimes these lamps are able to eliminate, to orient themselves with the light: it is a pity that they are also those who do not sting the man, therefore eliminating them will not reduce the number of bites we suffer by exposing ourselves in the vicinity of these lamps electrified.
It must also be said that the use of these devices can also become risky: especially if they are not cleaned of electrocuted corpses there is the (small but not non-existent) risk of starting a fire. As if that weren't enough, according to a study almost twenty years ago, the electrocution of insects spreads viruses and bacteria transported inside them.
Conclusions, price and dispassionate advice
Talking about Hisome Bug Zapper Light if it doesn't work makes sense to discourage the purchase of these products. If you don't know how to invest the 24.99 euros necessary to buy it on Amazon, remember that on Cyberlayman every day dozens of offers and discount codes are published on products that we consider interesting for our audience, sometimes already tested and favorably promoted by our editorial staff and we have also published a guide to the most effective mosquito repellent systems on this page.
Ah, if by any chance you are only interested in the lantern function, why not take a look at this? It recharges during the day thanks to a solar panel, you can put your mobile phone, keys, wallet and sunscreen in it and it can even float: a real pleasure to see it lit at sunset on the surface of the water while diving into the pool!
