Home Hi-Tech Android World ,,,,, Honeywell Lyric W1KS is the water leak detector that thinks to warn you in the event of a breakdown of the washing machine, various plumbing or other appliances in the house. Just turn it on and leave for the weekend out of town, rest assured that no eventual water loss will go unnoticed. Here's how it works.
Honeywell Lyric W1KS looks like a very small peripheral, with a minimal and modern front and a back made of a gray silicone cover, which covers the battery compartment. Yes, Honeywell W1KS works with three traditional AA batteries, and does not need to be plugged into the mains. That's good, and soon we'll tell why.
Unboxing
First of all, a photographic unboxing showing the exact content of the sales pack.
Configuration
The first start is really simple. After inserting the three batteries in the appropriate compartment, simply download the Honeywell Home app, free on the App Store and Google Play, and follow the information on the screen. In essence, it will be a question of pairing the Honewell hub with your home router. To do this, simply enter, when requested, the key of your home router and click on the next button. The initial setup takes just a few minutes, with the need to create a Honeywell account, entering your email and password.
After this first configuration it will be sufficient to connect the 3.5mm jack cable in the appropriate hole on the bottom of the device. Obviously, all that remains is to place the Honeywell W1KS where it suits you best, so next to a washing machine, a refrigerator, under the sink or where it is possible to expect water leaks. The sales package already includes a screw for the best positioning of the peripheral.
Operation
Simple to set up, just as simple to operate. After positioning it, it will be sufficient to let the wire hang down to the floor. As soon as the end of the lace comes in contact with water, Honeywell W1KS will emit a beep, represented by a very loud beep. Not only that: it will immediately send a notification to your smartphone, reporting the water leak in progress, thus allowing the user to intervene in time or to send someone on site to check.
During our tests Honeywell W1KS has always worked correctly: a drop of water is not enough to activate it, but it is necessary that the lace is slightly soaked in water. In short, after a loss, Honeywell W1KS is activated within a few seconds.
IFTT support
Honeywell W1KS also supports IFTTT. For the uninitiated, it is a protocol which, upon the occurrence of certain situations, carries out consequent actions. Hence, in fact, the name of the app “If This, Then That”, that is “if this, then that”. In this way it will be possible to further enhance the protection offered by Honeywell W1KS, not limiting itself to receiving a notification to the smartphone in the event of a water leak, but also being able to receive emails or SMS.
Application
The Honewell Home app is modern, easy to use and works really well. It immediately returns information on the temperature and humidity recorded in the room where the sensor is placed, as well as information on the state of charge of the battery. There is not much to get lost in the app menus, which tend to be used to notify you of a possible recorded water leak.
Conclusions
It might seem like a useless accessory. Well, hopefully it is, in the sense of never being warned of a water leak. However, it is an accessory that we believe to be of fundamental importance within a smart home: water leaks can really destroy entire apartments, and cause significant damage to the owner of the property just below. Honeywell W1KS works well, and notifies you as soon as the water leak is registered by the system, thus allowing you to intervene and patch before the damage spreads.
Its battery operation also avoids the danger of a lack of electricity, which would effectively nullify the operation of the peripheral. Being battery operated, Honeywell W1KS is self-contained, and will work even in the event of a power failure, but a water leak is still recorded.
It is not Homekit compatible but integrates well into IFTTT and the Lyric application allows the control on its behalf of the Honeywell T6R compatible Homekit thermostat that we tested on this page and the Honeywell C1 camera tested in turn by macitynet: obviously in this to communicate with the user, the router must be connected to an uninterruptible power supply or a backup power supply.
It costs 54 euros on Amazon and can be purchased directly at this address.
