Several months after the presentation, after putting it under pressure properly, Cyber Layman offers a test of Honor 10, top-of-the-range smartphone from Huawei's Honor line, with a mid-range price: in this article we find out together if it is a still valid terminal, which are the merits and which the defects, as long as there are.
Aesthetics
On an aesthetic level Honor 10 is a terminal that has nothing to fear compared to rivals, not even the most expensive ones. Clean lines on the front, with a small notch on the top, with a particularly elegant back, in full Honor style, which relies on the play of light seen at the official presentation, and also in the black color presented by us below. If the variants in blue and green are wonderful for those who love colors, this dark color is probably more elegant and less invasive.Dimensions and weight of Honor 10 represent, in all probability, the perfect meeting point between usability and a good visualization and use of multimedia contents. It measures 149.6 x 71.2 x 7.7 mm, with a weight of 153 grams, but does not give up a large 5.84-inch display, thanks to optimized bezels. Moreover, on the lower frame, there is a very elegant soft touch button, which eliminates (if desired) the virtual buttons on the screen, leaving the entire display at the complete disposal of the contents.
It holds wonderfully well in the hand, thanks to the low weight and the curved lines of the back cover. The grip is among the best, even if the phone has completely smooth surfaces: it does not slip at all, and the touch and feel is absolutely to be promoted. Although the dimensions are contained, Honor 10 returns a feeling of extreme solidity.
Technical characteristics
The data sheet speaks for itself: although there are terminals with higher specifications, Honor 10 is the top of the range of the Honor smartphone line. It proposes the CPU of Huawei, the powerful Kirin 970, flanked by 4 GB of RAM and a Mali-G72 GPU, with an integrated storage of 128 GB. the display, as anticipated, has a 5.84-inch diagonal, with a resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels, a 19: 9 apect ratio and a pixel density of 432 ppi. The panel has an IPS LCD technology, however very nice, bright enough, even if in the sunlight it gives something in terms of readability. These are absolutely small things, which do not undermine the use of the device at all, and which we underline for the record. Honor 10 is the manufacturer's flagship smartphone 2018 that presents the concept of “Intelligent Beauty” and reveals to consumers two cutting-edge technologies in the sector: the first is the AI 2.0, mainly applied to the dual camera of the smartphone, while the second is the CMF design, 3D glass body with a nanoscale optical coating composed of 15 layers of glass with a shimmering color.
The smartphone takes back the design of Honor 8 and 9, with an iridescent color. The light reflections stand out on the rear body and allow the terminal to take on different colors.
On the back stands the main chamber, a double sensor not flush with the body. While at this address you will find all the technical characteristics of the terminal, here it is necessary to reiterate that Honor 10 is equipped with an AI 2.0 camera, with the main camera from 24MP + 16MP. Before seeing how Honor 10 behaves in everyday life we believe we have to spend a few words on Touch and Face ID, both supported by this terminal. As already mentioned, a non-clickable soft touch button is present in the lower frame. Very beautiful and absolutely functional.
And indeed , you can use it to completely manage the UI, eliminating the virtual keys on the screen. With a click you go back, with a long click you go back to the Home, with the horizontal swipe multitasking opens, with one upwards you activate Google. The taps to go back and to the Home work very well, while the swipes, although they work, do not always work: on average, during our tests, 8 times out of 10.
Touch ID
The key, however, also works as Touch ID, then to unlock the terminal with your fingerprint. Huawei, and consequently Honor, have always been at the forefront of this technology, managing to bring the best Touch ID ever to smartphones. Although today the competition is increasingly fierce, Honor 10 has a lightning fast and reliable unlocking sensor: it works 10 times out of 10. There is no denying: despite the horizontally elongated shape, with a really small touch surface, i Touch ID performs its duty very well.
If we were to rate Touch ID, it would certainly be 10 with honors.
Face ID
Honor 10 does not enjoy the technology under the iPhone X, and when we talk about Face ID we refer to a 2D face unlock . On Honor 10 it works quite well, and manages to unlock the terminal almost always, even in low light conditions. This is because the face is illuminated by the display, which increases the brightness for a few seconds. It sure won't be as safe as that of the iPhone X, but using it is enough.
It's not super fast. Or rather, in some cases it seems instantaneous, while in others it takes about a second. If we were to compare it with that of OnePlus 5T and 6, it would be these last two models that would certainly have the upper hand. In any case, thanks to the various sensors that Honor 10 enjoys, it is sufficient to lift the terminal from the desk to awaken it from the stand-by state and activate the Face ID: practically in order to use it, the user will only have to lift it and take it to the face, so as to find yourself almost immediately on the home screen.
In this case, the score we would assign to Face ID, considering the limits, but also its features, would be 7.5. In short, it is certainly not the perfect unlocking method, but it is absolutely functional, able to effectively complement the Touch ID.
Daily use
It is difficult to distinguish one terminal from another in everyday life. When it comes to top of the range, with powerful CPUs and quality hardware components, the difference between one and the other is played by the hundredths of a second. Honor 10 is a fluid, fast terminal, which does not have sudden slowdowns or crashes. It works well with the whole Android universe, it really does not fear comparisons. You navigate just as well, and you switch from one app to another without the slightest problem. In short, one can only be satisfied with the use of this Honor 10 and 90% of users will not notice real differences with terminals that cost more.
Wanting to be strict, and the role requires it, we notice in Honor 10 a fluidity general and of the interface and animations, slightly (something imperceptible) lower than the terminals we recently tested with Snapdragon 835 or 845 CPUs. keyboard, we feel a slight difference compared to a OnePlus 6, just to name one. These are really imperceptible elements, which you only realize by passing from one smartphone to another.
In any case, just to want to deepen the question, we decided to enable the developer menu and to increase the speed of the animations (or even eliminate the animations ): we noticed some improvements. In any case, these are really imperceptible details, but they absolutely do not affect the overall judgment of this smartphone which, as you will see in the conclusions, is absolutely positive.
Multimedia department
Honor 10 also excels in the multimedia department, thanks to an excellent photographic sector. The rear cameras are 24MP (monochrome) and 16MP, and really offer many shooting modes, including studio effects, Portraits, Filters, Selfie in AR and various artistic modes. If you are looking for a smartphone that makes you have fun with shots, Honor 10 is the one for you. Lots of shooting modes, but with attention also to quality. The front camera is 24 MP.
When taking a photo with the rear camera in automatic mode, the camera will take the same shot with both sensors and combine the images for a photo with more detail than a single lens shot.
The quality of the photos is excellent, even if it does not reach the levels of the Huawei P20. Honor 10 also has artificial intelligence applied to photos, thanks to which it will be possible to improve your shots: the sensor automatically identifies the subject of the shot and through software sets certain parameters to the best, so as to illuminate the areas, change the focus. , and manage other parameters. Honor 10 can identify 22 different scenes, including plants or pets. Below is a comparison with AI activated and deactivated.

The camera software also has many advanced features, all of which can be activated in pro mode. The effects that can be applied to the photos are many, including stickers in real time, filters, the possibility of photographing light trails, such as those of fireworks. And again, there is no shortage of studio effects, in the style of iPhone X, to create photos as if they were taken inside a photo studio. Also available the mode that makes the background completely black and enhances the facial features: they are not perfect, but the result for a smartphone that costs so little is really excellent.

A little more limited the video department, which allows you to record videos up to 4Ka 30 fps, but that does not have stabilization on either 4K videos or 1080p videos at 60 fps. In any case, considering that it is a smartphone that costs just over 300 euros, we are also absolutely satisfied with the video department.
As always, we let the reader judge the quality of the shot. In this way, beyond the technical characteristics on paper, and turns of words, you immediately realize the quality of each shot.
Software
Honor 10 runs Android 8.1 Oreo, customized with EMUI 8.1 interface. Although it is not the preferred UI by myself, the progress made by the manufacturer in this regard is undeniable. The UI is now much cleaner, with a streamlined and simplified Settings menu, where however all the options are just a click away.
In addition to the configuration with touch button, it is possible also set the virtual keys, or an iPhone X-style virtual bar. By default there is no app drawer and all the apps are arranged on the Home, as happens on iOS. It is possible, however, to activate the app drawer from the Settings, to have an experience as close as possible to the stock Android one.
The themes are present, but in the opinion of the writer, Honor and Huawei would have to improve from this point of view. In any case there is no shortage of appreciable ones, including the standard ones present by default.
Autonomy
The 3400 mAh battery does not it works wonders, but it is enough. We managed to get 4 and a half hours of screen on. Overall you arrive in the evening without worries of mind even with intense use. Average battery, without particular head shots, neither positive nor negative.
Conclusions
In these days several friends they asked me for advice on which smartphone to buy, having a budget of around 300/350 euros available. I had no doubts: Honor 10 is the best choice. It is a top of the range in the Honor line, and has everything you could want from a quality terminal. Aesthetically valid, optimal size and weight, good screen, excellent photographic department, average autonomy, lightning-fast fingerprint sensor. Really, on this price range it is among the best purchases.
Our advice is to buy it from GearBest, which sells it for just 337 euros, with prices even lower than Amazon; thanks to Italy Express shipments it will be received in about 8 days, with a very low risk of customs duties, almost zero.
