Honor 6X Premium Review: Don't call it mid-range

Home Hi-Tech Android World ,,,,,

Born from the rib of Huawei, Honor has shown that it can deserve an exceptional place within the Android smartphone landscape. The latest novelty of the company is called Honor 6X, which Cyber Layman has tested in the premium version, with 4GB of RAM and 64 of integrated storage. On paper a medium range, in everyday use much more.

Honor 6X Premium does not have a particularly original or refined aesthetic. The front is clean, with only the company logo on the bottom, while the front chamber, ear capsule, proximity sensor and notification LED are on the top. It marries a bit the philosophy of minimalism so dear to many modern smartphones. On the side the compartment for the dual SIM, while on the other, we find the volume rocker and the power button. On the lower part there are the speaker grille and the MicroUSB port, while on the upper edge there is the 3.5 jack for headphones. On the back, however, the surprise: in addition to the fingerprint reader, there is also a double photographic module.

Overall, therefore, the aesthetics, although not extremely original and refined, are pleasant. It has dimensions of 150.9 x 72.6 x 8.2 mm with a weight of 162 grams, well distributed, which are not particularly noticeable. The rounded edges help a firm grip and although the rear is completely made of aluminum, the silencer is much less slippery than many other similar silencers.

In daily use

The data sheet speaks of a medium range. The 5.5-inch IPS display with Full HD resolution, Kirin 655 Octa-Core CPU, with 4 cores at 2.1GHz and 4 at 1.7GHz. The RAM is 4 GB (which is reduced to 3 in the cheapest model), with an integrated storage space of 64 GB (32 GB in the entry level model). These numbers translate, in daily use, into a phone that is always snappy, lag-free and ready for any operation. He has tested it with numerous applications, always open in the background, without ever experiencing slowdowns, let alone refresh the home. The processor really does its job and thanks to the 4 GB of RAM, Honor 6X Premium has nothing to envy to other higher-end terminals. Everything works fine, from web browsing to the most basic operations, such as messaging apps, those for streaming and even those related to the gaming sector.

Among the prominent elements, as already mentioned, the fingerprint reader: in no uncertain terms, among the best ever. Not only is it among the most reliable and fastest when compared with the entire Android ecosystem, but it has nothing to envy even to the iPhone's Touch ID. First of all, it will not be necessary to press anything, but it will be enough to place your finger on it to unlock the access. Furthermore, the unlocking speed is almost instantaneous. Often and willingly, thanks to the rear position, when you extract the terminal from a pocket, you will not even realize that you have requested access to the home: the sensor is hollowed, so you will not even have difficulty in identifying it. In short, the Honor 6X has one of the best fingerprint readers on the market.

Multimedia

The camera department is also an element of pride for Honor 6X. It is not easy to see a double photographic module on a mid-range terminal. Honor succeeds in the enterprise, offering two sensors on the back: the first from 12 MP, the second from 2 Mpx. The result is a more than satisfactory camera department. The photos during the day, with excellent light are appreciable, they do not scream a miracle, but they are still well made, better than many other devices in the same price range. Where, on the other hand, the double module gives its best are the shots in low light.

In the dark Very low light Still in the dark Low Light Food Mode Soft lights Still food mode Macro with bokeh effect Good lights Optimal light Macro Good lights Good lights Optimal light Good lights

We tested the camera in completely dark environments, and with very low light, with really interesting results. Reduced photographic noise, with colors that remain true to reality. In this case, Honor 6X far exceeds many smartphones of the same price range, and manages to be even better than some higher-end terminals, however, equipped with a single photographic module.

Despite a pretty standard camera app interface, I'm really there are many options available, all easily accessible through simple slides, which give access to the choice menus. For example, options are available for photographing food, others for beauty effects, others allow you to apply a sort of watermark with weather, dates and other information. In short, a terminal that will also satisfy photography lovers. The front camera is 8 MP, rather standard, it allows you to take selfies and make video calls without any problem.

The video department instead reserves a few surprises, resulting quite standard, with the possibility of a maximum resolution of 1080p; the quality is good, with good fluidity and sufficient ability to record ambient sounds. The videos are not maximally stabilized, but overall the result is still sufficient and appreciable.

EMUI

The operating system deserves an in-depth discussion. Currently Honor 6X / Premium, it is based on Android Marshmallow, but the manufacturer has already promised the release of Nougat by March. There are so many small customizations of the EMUI, which allow a truly flexible use of the device. First of all, despite the lack of the app drawer (which will be inserted with EMUI 5.0) it is possible to pinch out on the home to access a menu, where all the hidden apps are present.

Also present is the one-hand mode, which allows, through a simple slide on the navigation bar, to reduce the screen area, so that you can use the device with one hand. Again, with the screen off, it will be possible to keep pressing the Volume down key to activate voice recognition and make quick calls. A double click on the volume down button, on the other hand, turns on the camera and takes a picture in just about 1 second.

The navigation bar, which has virtual keys on the screen, can be customized, with the possibility of adding a fourth key, to call up the notification menu. A slide down allows you to call up a Universal Search, which allows you to search for installed apps or perform quick web searches. In short, the EMUI is among the most appreciated Android graphic interfaces, full of themes to customize your device

Autonomy also really deserves applause . The 3340 mAh battery does its duty and allows, even with intense use, to arrive in the evening with a good percentage of residual energy. During our tests, even using Android Auto often, navigator on and Spotify in multitasking, we always passed a full day of use, and not the classic 12-hour day from morning to night.

Where's the catch?

How did Honor put all this into a 249 euro terminal ( 299 for the premium version)? It is not a miracle and somewhere he must have had to save. The materials used, for example, are not at the levels of a premium smartphone. The same aluminum on the back, in fact, gives a different feeling, poorer, compared to the aluminum of other more expensive smartphones. Even the glass covering the screen seemed less resistant than many others. On the net some tests have shown how easy it is to scratch the screen; in fact, while using the phone with the utmost attention, we managed without even realizing it, to scratch it in some points. In short, a product that is functionally excellent, but which shows some limitations in the materials used. However, the choice is not open to criticism, and indeed it seems normal that this is the case. It will be enough to buy a protective glass and a simple case to have a product safe from problems. For those wishing, instead, to buy an official Honor cover, even if at a slightly higher price, the advice is to click here, to buy the Flip Cover.

Conclusions

Honor 6X, at least in the top version we tested, is a quality smartphone, really recommended to anyone , even for photo lovers. Lightning-fast fingerprint sensor, fast in everyday use and great battery. Among the limits of the display easy to scratch, we recommend the use of a quality tempered glass film.

It costs 249 euros in the version with 3 GB of RAM, while it reaches 299 euros in the higher-end variant with 4 GB of RAM, to be released soon.
