Huawei P10 review, our impressions after months of use

Home Hi-Tech Android World ,,,, cof,

After 4 months of use and numerous releases of competing smartphones on the market, all top of the range, the editorial staff of macitynet responds to those who wonder if Huawei P10 is still a valid choice, or whether the presence of Galaxy S8, LG G6 on the market could affect the dominance of the Chinese company. Here's what we think of this terminal.

First of all the aesthetics. When it was presented, users had already had in mind for a few hours the idea of larger screens and extremely small bezels, as exhibited in the same hours by LG with LG G6. Many expected a similar solution, taken up instead by Samsung with S8, yet Huawei P10 has a more traditional appearance, with optimized frames, but without a real “Infinity Display”.

From the point of aesthetic view the P10 resumes the lines of the iPhone 7, and completely revolutionizes its Touch ID, positioning it on the front, thus giving up the iconic back button, present instead on many other smartphones of the brand. The fingerprint key also changes shape, elongating at the sides, resulting in an oval, and no longer completely spherical.

Huawei P10

Small in the dimensions and light weight, 145.3 x 69.3 x 7mm, for 145 grams, it is held in the hand very well, can be used almost completely with one hand, but does not give up on a large 5.1-inch display. Despite the upper and lower bezels, the terminal is really well optimized and from an aesthetic point of view it does not look bad compared to other smartphones with larger displays and thinner bezels. In short, it is a top of the range even at sight, also due to the metal construction, interrupted by the classic plastic bands for the antennas. Even today, therefore, Huawei P10 is at sight one of the most elegant and minimal smartphones.

Technical features

Huawei P10 is the flagship smartphone of the company and it is easy to expect top technical features. It adopts the HiSilicon Kirin 960 processor, the same one under the Huawei Mate 9, reviewed by Cyber Layman at this address. The processor is very performing, with a 2.4 GHz octa core CPU, flanked by a Mali-G71 MP8 GPU and 4 GB of RAM. 64 GB integrated storage expandable via microSD.

Among other specifications, the terminal enjoys Wi-Fi ac, LTE up to 600 Mbps, bluetooth 4.2, Type-C connector. For radio lovers, however, bad news, no FM radio. Needless to say, the terminal runs particularly smoothly, is snappy, can be used well in any field and with any application, but it is not surprising considering the technical data sheet.

It must be said that, thanks to the high temperatures of this period, the terminal tends to heat up on the upper part, right in correspondence with the rear logo

The usual applause goes to the fingerprint sensor: in general, Huawei is one of the companies that does best in this particular sector, surpassing the precision and speed of any iPhone. In this P10 changes the position of the Touch ID, but not its traditional reliability. The terminal is unlocked 10 times out of 10, very quickly.

It will be necessary, however, to become familiar with this new multifunctional button, hollowed in the front glass, which has no mechanical clicks. In addition to unlocking, however, it also allows you to hide the virtual keys on the screen, and incorporates the classic back / home key functions. With a long press, in fact, you will return directly to the Home, with a single tap you will go back, and with a small horizontal slide on the central button you will recall multitasking.

This last gesture is, probably, the one that works worse, even if after a little practice you will be able to call the apps in the background at least 8 times out of 10. There is also an upward gesture to call up Google Now. In short, the multifunctional key is what, in the opinion of the writer, makes the P10 better than the previous range, because it allows you to hide the virtual keys on the screen, to enjoy the entire display area, without annoying black bands.

Multimedia The photographic department is one of the reasons why you should buy the Huawei P10. On paper, the numbers are important: rear camera with dual sensor designed together with Leica 20MP f / 2.2 and 12MP, while on the front there is an 8MP Leica f / 1.9 sensor. Rich Camera application, which allows many shooting modes, including HDR, panorama, night photo, slow motion, time-lapse, document scan, live photos and more.

experts will be able to try their hand at numerous automatic adjustments, modifying ISO and other more technical parameters, such as white balance, focus, and others. P10 allows you to take photos at a maximum resolution of 20MP, 5120 × 3840 in 4: 3 format, with the possibility of saving photos also in RAW format.

The photos taken with P10 are extremely good, full of details, with always natural colors. However, it is not the standard photos, of excellent workmanship, that have impressed us the most. The real highlight of the P10 are the photos with bokeh effect and those in black and white. The portrait mode of this P10 is really appreciable, and the terminal allows you to take pictures with blurry effects comparable, almost, to those of expensive cameras.

The difference is also in white shots and black: thanks to the monochrome sensor it is not a simple filter applied to the color photo, but a real B / W photo, with an incredibly high number of details. These are two features that honor the photographic department of P10, while the traditional photos, very valid, are on average with any other top of the range on the market.

In some photos we were amazed by the ability of the terminal to quickly assess the exposure, in others, on the other hand, surprised us by the focus, with excellent exposures to sources of sudden illumination. Even with HDR the photos are rich in detail. In short, a terminal that certainly allows you to play with photos.

Software The software side of Huawei P10 is based on Android 7.0 with EMUI 5.1. Always valid as a UI, minimal in the menus, Huawei must undoubtedly improve in terms of themes: of the hundreds present online and downloadable, very few are convincing. None of these offer that homogeneity sought by other productions.

You must then resort to third-party apps to download, instead, some convincing theme, such as those that simulate Android Stock, or the latest Samsung UI . For the rest, the EMUI 5.1 convinces, reactive and refined in the menus, it also offers particularly appreciable features, such as screenshots of long pages, the possibility of taking photos in less than a second by double-tapping the volume down key (even from the screen off), or the ability to use the knuckles to crop a screen of the screen.

We were not particularly convinced by the 3200 mAh battery, improved after the first updates and the first system adjustments; you arrive in the evening, but nothing more, while with particularly intense use you may need a little “topping up”.

No problems with reception, excellent in all respects of sight. We have also tested the terminal in countryside areas or seaside resorts, particularly far from inhabited centers. We never noticed an absent signal, and we always received all incoming calls correctly. Clean and crystal clear conversations, without the slightest problem.

Conclusions A months after its release Huawei P10 is a highly recommended purchase in the Android field, considering the price lowered sales compared to the launch. If initially the 679 euros requested might seem too much, at 450 euros, the average price in the many online sites, they make it a valid alternative to all the other top of the range available, which often have slightly higher prices.

A terminal for those who love photos in portrait mode, or black and white. Aesthetically, then, the perfect device for those who have appreciated the aesthetics of the iPhone 6, 6s and iPhone 7 and must turn to the operating system market with the green robot.
