HyperX Cloud Revolver S review, the headset for pro gaming

Cloud Revolver S is a model of high-performance wired headphones that crowns the HyperX catalog, definitely raising the bar of a young but in continuous ascent. The creation of Kingston, a much better known brand for the production of memories and accessories on a wider range, finds here a point of remarkable quality, thanks to a strong relevance to the market towards which it is most open and also to important technical qualities, suitable ( not just a feature) both to the PC and Mac environments.

The headphones, which we had already had the opportunity to discover during the presentation in Milan, are presented in an “authoritative” way right from the start from the packaging: once the cardboard cover with the graphics has been removed, the internal designer box opens revealing the headphones, immersed in a soft cradle, the contour cables, the external sound card (which we will talk about shortly) and a small introductory manual useful for understanding the first stages of configuration, anything but to be underestimated.

In fact, before talking about performance, it is better to focus on the details of the product, internal and external.

Cloud R evolver S, you can feel the difference

The appearance of the Cloud Revolver S is massive, important: once worn it does not disappear, on the contrary: despite the absence of colored LEDs around it , the fact that they are wearing anything but negligible. The steel structure that supports the pavilions, which in turn contain two 50 mm drivers, is accompanied by a soft cushion that rests on the head and supports the weight, which is not excessive given the shape, with elastic adjustments that in practice they adapt themselves to the size of the head.

The part of the pavilions, individually adjustable in all directions thanks to a small game, is very comfortable even in long sessions, such as those in which we we tested it. The cable, made of braided nylon, is very sturdy and easy to untie when braided, thanks to curves that never tighten.

The microphone is removable, and has a hook at the bottom of the left pavilion. The arm of the same is soft and can be moved about 90 ° from the original position, to be able to move it away from the mouth on the fly for a moment.

The sound card external

In their simplest version the Cloud Revolver S are equipped with a single cable with stereo mini Jack, one meter long, which can be connected to any analog source with Jack plug and work like a normal pair of stereo headphones.

In addition to this, the package also contains an extension cable, of about 2 meters, which allows connection to a more distant source, always carrying the input and output signal ( microphone).

But it is the last cable that really makes the difference and makes these headphones special: basically it is an external sound card, which connects to the computer via USB and to headphones via mini Jack and which allows you to amplify the potential of multi-channel audio.

The sound card, which also offers a convenient clip to be attached to clothes, shows two central buttons, one for switching on the actual chip and one for mute the microphone, plus two analog adjustments of the input volume and the microphone volume.

The configuration of the Audio MIDI configuration panel

Once the sound card is connected, it is necessary to carefully follow the instructions to correctly define the operation, but this is a phase that takes no more than a couple of minutes and which on Mac involves the Audio panel in System Preferences and Midi Audio Configuration in Utility.

Once the configuration is defined in 7.1 and switched on the card, the sound becomes spatial: in the sense that the previously stereo source disappears as the audio reference point disappears, which seems to rotate around the user's head.

And if you think that this happens only with games, which as we will see is fundamental in some titles, you are mistaken liate: we used in a very interesting way some simple audio tracks in MP3 or AAC with iTunes or VOX to discover how the audio can be better when it virtually sweeps around the user, without having a precise connotation as in the case of a video game .

Obviously everything is amplified in suitable titles: we have tried some titles, such as the beta of Unreal Tournament (currently in development, but free for all Mac and PC users who want to try it, even if there are still parts to finish) where the 7.1 audio is enhanced.

The spatiality of the sound during a fight is essential to understand where shots and bots come from, and allows you to gain that tenth of a second that they can be fundamental. The use of the wire, instead of a wireless connection, avoids problems of lag or frequency drops, in addition to having no battery problems.

The microphone is also very good, with a clear sound and well defined, undoubtedly helped by the NC (Noise canceling) chip inside, which essentially eliminates all environmental disturbances by letting only the user's voice pass.

Considerations

The HyperX Cloud Revolver S have proved to be an excellent pair of headphones for particularly demanding users: the sound quality , expanded by the multichannel effect both in the music and videogame fields, make it a model particularly suitable for those with advanced needs in the audio field, but basically we cannot fail to recommend them to all those who want to experience multichannel audio without having the economic and logistical possibility. to equip a room.

It's not a pair of headphones for every day, of course you, because on the one hand the use of the external sound card provides a USB-A input and on the other hand the shape and the important presence limit its use, from our point of view, only with a computer, a console or a smart TV.

On the other hand, the use of cable instead of a wireless solution offers security, power and versatility that would otherwise require compromises, and a longevity that does not have autonomy between requests , features that in the field of streamers and gamers are essential.

HyperX Cloud Revolver S can be found in various stores at a price of 169.99 euros, but can also be found discounted on Amazon.it
