The advent of USB-C technology, which is slowly replacing the traditional USB A, has somewhat upset the plans of many users, who often find themselves having to buy different adapters: there are many manufacturers, Apple in the first place, who they rely on a single USB-C port, just as there are many Android smartphones to be equipped with this input. The USB-C input has a lot of potential, but without the right adapter it could be complicated to use the accessories. Inateck 7-in1 USB-C Hub solves the problem and manages to tame all USB-C devices.
The Inateck peripheral is, essentially, a USB-C to OTG adapter, compatible with most devices with a Type-C socket with OTG. It can be used with Apple Macbooks that use this input, but also with other Android laptops, smartphones and tablets. The functions of this hub are so many, and are not limited only to reading memory cards, it is also possible to connect external mice and keyboards.
The Hub is a 7-in-1: 4 memory card slots and 3 USB 2.0 ports, thanks to which it is possible to read data from microSD, SD, MS, M2, U-Disk and other flash drives. It is also possible to connect an external keyboard, again via the USB ports. Apparently the adapter is a small square, light and only a few centimeters per side. It fits comfortably in your pocket and can literally disappear in a notebook bag.
It also has a USB A to DC power cable, so that thanks to a constant power supply, it can also be used with peripherals that consume a lot of current. During our tests, to tell the truth, we never needed to connect it to the power supply.
It is totally Plug and play, so there is no need for drivers, various installations or particular setups. It is sufficient to insert the USB-C connector for correct operation: a LED light will indicate the activity status of the hub.
We have tested it mainly with Android smartphones and tablets, considering that on Mac it does not return any problems and it is always easier to use these peripherals in desktop environments. However, we did not expect the peripheral to work very well even on a smartphone.
In particular, on a OnePlus 6T, we were able to read microSD, SD, USB sticks without any problem. At the first insertion, a pop up on the screen reminded us of the pre-installed manager, who immediately gave us access to all the data on the memory cards. Obviously, it was not necessary to power the Hub externally, as the power supply coming from the smartphone via USB-C was sufficient.
The surprise then came with the use of external Bluetooth keyboards and mice: it was enough to insert the BT transmitter to use a keyboard mouse combo on a smartphone. After connecting the bluetooth dongle we immediately appreciated the presence of the screen cursor on the smartphone, with a fully functional mouse. Moreover, even with the external mouse we were able to navigate perfectly on a gesture-based UI.
Conclusions
The Inateck USB-C Hub is a great companion for anyone who owns a device with only USB-C ports. Not only for those who have a latest generation Macbook, but also for all those who have an Android USB-C OTG smartphone. It is easily transportable and has numerous inputs to read any external memory. The fact that it supports external mice and keyboards is really an added value.
It costs 13.99 euros and can be purchased directly on Amazon.
