Syllable D9X is among the latest exponents to adopt a solution similar to that of Apple, but proposing a slightly different idea, based on interchangeable batteries with magnetic coupling. Here's how they behave.

While the idea of Syllable D9X is the same as AirPods, on the other hand they have an important difference: each headset is actually made up of two different elements. In addition to the headset itself, in fact, everyone needs the battery for operation, represented by an additional plastic body, of very small dimensions, which hooks us magnetically. Inside the sales package, in addition to the two earphones, there are also four small batteries, which can be housed and recharged, inside the case / power bank included.
The latter can contain 4 refills, but it can recharge two at a time, and cannot also accommodate the earphones themselves, which must be placed inside a cloth case, or inside the additional zip-lock bag. . It would have been preferable to have also been able to insert the earphones inside the charging case, which instead must be positioned separately.
How they are made
In terms of materials, the plastics are quite cheap, but overall the earphones are well built, they do not have creaks of any kind. The refills bind to the earphones magnetically. The force of attraction is not very high, but sufficient to keep the battery in place and to avoid letting it come off during a walk or a run. Each battery offers slightly less than two hours of continuous playback, rated at 38mAh each.
The charging base, the power bank case, is instead equipped with a 400 mAh battery, which realistically manages to recharge the complete set for about two and a half times. The system of interchangeable refills is quite comfortable and interesting, original compared to the choice made by Apple or other manufacturers and, to be honest, quite comfortable. It's just a pity that the power bank case cannot also contain earphones, but is only a base for recharging. Each earphone has a single large button, which allows you to manage pause and start of music playback.
Features
In terms of features, these True Wireless Stereo earphones, support Apt-X technology, offer an integrated microphone to manage phone calls and are based on Bluetooth 4.2. The pairing is always easy and immediate with the devices we tested, therefore iPhone, iPad and also numerous Android smartphones.
Of course, it doesn't have the same ease of pairing as AirPods, but after the first pairing, the earphones automatically pair with nearby devices. Between the two earphones, the main one is the left one, which can play in total autonomy, even in the absence of a connected right earphone, and which is used for telephone conversations, which will therefore enjoy support for a single earphone. Even if connected, in fact, the right earphone cannot be used for phone calls.
How they sound
Considering the sale price, discounted on Amazon at 49.99 euros instead of about 100 euros, one can only be satisfied with the sound quality of the earphones. First of all, thanks to the three different sizes of silicone fins, they are comfortable to wear. Finding the right setup will be able to “fit” them perfectly inside the auricle: Syllable D9X are, in short, in position without any particular problem.
The maximum volume is not very high, but nevertheless, they manage to isolate particularly well from the external environment. It is not possible, of course, to have complete isolation, as can be that of an over-ear headphone, but overall these are earphones that can also be good for commuters, for those who listen to music on public transport or in crowded places.
Partially different speech for telephone conversations, which enjoying the support of a single earphone, the left one, take place at an even lower volume, and without any isolation effect from the surrounding noises. This means that it will be hard to talk on the phone using the earphones when you are in noisy places. On the other hand, however, indoors in an office, or at home, it is possible to have a good conversation. The receiver listens to clean audio, without interference and with absolutely sufficient volume, as well as those who use earphones can hear a clean and precise sound, with a volume that is not very high, but acceptable in closed and silent environments.
As for music reproduction, the Syllable DX9 defends itself really well. There is a little lack of bass, but it is natural considering the nature of earphones, while they are absolutely balanced from every other point of view. The volume is not very high, but still well calibrated, and able to isolate, as already mentioned. All genres of music sound good, the audio doesn't overdo it in any context, and it's always clean, free of smudges. You are immediately satisfied with the device, also in consideration of the price, absolutely in line with the quality offered.
Conclusions
The Syllable D9X headsets are priced in line with what they offer. They play well any musical genre, are comfortable to wear and the interchangeable refill system allows you to never run out of battery. It is a pity not to be able to insert the earphones inside the power bank case, but considering the small size of the device it is easy to think of being able to carry them thanks to the bag included in the package, or even simply in your pocket.
They are not audiophile earphones but are absolutely enjoyable for those who want to listen to some music while walking down the street, thanks to good insulation. Considering the low cost, they seem like a good budget alternative to AirPods, even if the build quality isn't comparable.
