Ahead of the American National Week for Eating Disorders Awareness , Instagram and TikTok in partnership with National Eating Disorders Awareness ( NEDA ) are carrying out some beautiful initiatives aimed at people affected by these disorders.
Regarding Instagram , when users search for hashtags or content that is potentially linked to eating disorders, the company will guide them towards resources and help lines provided by NEDA , but only in the United States , in United Kingdom , in Australia and in Canada . From now on, the referral will take place towards resources specifically designed around individual eating disorders .
A similar update was also announced today by TikTok . Users who will search for terms such as “ eating disorder “, “ edrecovery ” (eating disorder recovery) or “ proana “(pro-anorexia) will see a link redirect them to support resources integrated with the contacts NEDA . TikTok will also offer targeted advice which it has developed together with eating disorder experts . NEDA also helped TikTok create ads that will appear on the hashtag pages such as #whatieatinaday, #emotionalatingtips, #bingerecovery.
