Home Hi-Tech Drones and UAVs ,,,,, If you are looking for a NON toy drone to start flying, that has features of high-end drones, but you don't want to spend a lot, then JJPRO X5 could be for you. Cyber Layman put him to the test. Here's what it looks like, who it's suitable for, and what it can, and can't, do.
JJPRO X5 is a small to medium size drone. It is not, just to understand, the size of a DJI Phantom. It is smaller, comparable to an open Mavic Air, although the shape and design are completely different. It comes with a rather classic shape for a drone, it is already assembled when it is delivered at home, and the user will only have to start the flight immediately after unpacking. The advice, however, is to read the manual carefully before starting the engines. Although, in fact, it has the appearance of a toy, and in part it is, JJPRO X5 enjoys some technical characteristics typical of high-end drones.
In fact, let's start by saying that without a first compass calibration, the drone will not start. After turning it on by inserting the battery into the compartment, you will need to rotate the drone for the first calibrations. Only after this simple setup will it be possible to start the motors, which otherwise will not start. When first powered up, the drone is in calibration mode.
JJPRO X5 enjoys brushless motors, and is rather quiet in flight. It is small and light, but not lacking in power. The brushless motors, in fact, allow it to travel at a particularly high speed: the first sensations we had are those of a racing drone. Obviously it is not, but the speed is such that it almost feels like driving a racing. Small, light, but powerful, in flight it really looks like a ferret.
JJPRO X5, among other features, enjoys GPS module. This means that it can be piloted with extreme simplicity: the aircraft stabilizes in the air and remains there until the remote control is handled. We tested it in really adverse weather conditions: with strong winds and close to the sea. Even in these particular conditions the drone seemed particularly stable and did not suffer from the wind at all. It surprised us, considering its small size, and it held up really well in flight even in gusts.
We also tested the automatic return to the base: also in this case, always in strong wind conditions, the drone landed practically in the exact point from which it had previously taken off. From the flight point of view, JJPRO X5 was a very pleasant surprise, and it is truly the right drone to start: simple enough, but with an on-board equipment that is truly unrivaled.
Where the drone fails, unfortunately, is the multimedia department. The camera allows you to record videos up to 1080p. Unfortunately it has not stabilized. A gimbal is missing, or some sort of software stabilization. This affects the overall quality of the movie, because you will certainly not be able to enjoy a particularly stable video.
The flight range is good, which on paper should reach about 500 – 800 meters. Of course, these distances cannot be reached due to current regulations. We do not believe, to be fair, that the drone reaches these distances: after a few hundred meters the video signal, which is transmitted to the smartphone in WiFi, begins to fail. Probably the drone could reach about 200/300 meters of distance.
Also excellent is the battery, small in size, from 1800 mAh, ensures the 15 minutes of flight declared by the manufacturer. Even in strong wind conditions, therefore with the effort of the higher engines, we still managed to well exceed 10 minutes of flight, almost reaching the declared target.
Conclusions
JJPRO X5 is the perfect drone to get started. Brushless motors, particularly efficient GPS, working automatic take-off and landing button and really effective RTH. These are features that one would expect from a high-end drone, concentrated instead in an aircraft for less than 150 euros. Good autonomy, excellent flight speed: piloting it is fun. It is the drone to start familiarizing with quadcopters, even if you will not be able to take quality shots, due to the lack of a gimbal.
You can buy it on GearBest for about 149 euros, with the second battery included in the bundle, to have a flight time close to half an hour.
