It is also a very elegant solution, because Twelve South Journal is entirely made of high quality leather, not only on the outside but also on the inside. This is evidenced by the genuine leather logo engraved on the inside, but it is also confirmed by the unmistakable scent that only real leather gives off.
The refined design completes the work with resistant stitching in plain sight, as well as grooves and engravings that embellish the whole. Looking at the coast, the cover looks very much like a small pocket book, bound in leather by hand, with a look that is between vintage and modern, very successful.
But as anticipated, aesthetics and materials are not the only strengths. The book opening shows iPhone XR on the right and on the left three card slots, the last one at the bottom equipped with a transparent window to show the photo of the identity document or driving license without even having to extract the document. Under the three compartments we have a much larger one, perfect for hosting cash and more.
Our precious iPhone XR is housed inside a hard shell, also lined with soft leather. The protection offered is high and almost total: the only exposed part, but protected by abundant and protruding edges, is the lower one where the speakers and the Lightning connector are located, in this way the audio is not obstructed and we have free access to the recharge.
iPhone XR no longer needs to be removed from its new, second skin, thus greatly reducing the risk of scratches and more serious damage. Not only are the front and rear leather flaps thick and abundant, but also the internal hard shell that firmly houses the iPhone offers a protruding edge that runs along the entire perimeter of the terminal. Even if it slips out of our hands and falls with the lid open, the screen should not be damaged because it is set and slightly lower than the protective edge.
This precious book cover leaves the lens and rear flashes free to take pictures and record videos freely, also both super protected by an abundant protective edge several millimeters thick.
Holding the iPhone XR inserted in Twelve South Journal is a bit like pulling out an elegant leather wallet made by some famous fashion brand, a feeling made even more pleasant by the sense of high protection and security given to the terminal.
But there is still a plus of no small importance: by placing the front panel on a plane, our iPhone XR can slide forward a few millimeters, just enough to leverage and remain in position, slightly inclined towards us. Acting as a support we can watch movies, videos, make FaceTime or Skype video calls all hands-free.
Conclusions
For size and weight Twelve South Journal for iPhone XR cannot be compared to the thin and light covers that are the most popular, but we are in a different planet, for quality, materials, protection offered, but also for the functions performed.
The comparison with the minimal covers does not hold up in terms of weight and dimensions, but everything takes on another meaning if we welcome the change by abandoning the wallet, perhaps lightening the usual load, to combine purse, cover and iPhone all in one. By combining two objects of common use together with the iPhone, the increase in weight and dimensions of the iPhone XR dressed with this cover become one less object to look after and an extra free pocket.

Twelve South Journal is available from iPhone 7 onwards for all iPhone models, including the Plus ones, up to iPhone X, XS Max, XS and iPhone XR as the model we tested for this review. It is offered in black and cognac, like the model reviewed, on the manufacturer's website in the USA for 80 dollars.
The Journal covers for iPhone are also available on Amazon Italy, so it is very likely that the new model for iPhone XR will arrive soon.
