Home Cyber Layman Mac Accessories ,,,,,
Living in Milan, we often travel for work to Rome, Naples, Turin or Venice: all trips that can be made today in one day round trip, but for which It is always necessary to bring a bag that, in addition to the computer, can accommodate the change of clothes of the day and any accessories.
For this reason, after having happily tested the Kensington Triple Trek backpack, we have set our sights on something more capacious and capable like SecureTrek, from the same house and that we had already seen here, which among the technical characteristics of capacity also includes an interesting integrated padlock, useful at the airport, on the train but also simply during a lunch at Autogrill with of colleagues.
The point is that today in the computer bag, or backpack, we put our whole life inside. The computer, the backup disks, the tablet, which in practice keep not only their economic value (usually a few thousand Euros) but also the emotional or intellectual value (given by the documents inside them), often much higher than the first.
Choosing the right bag or backpack for a trip for which it is a responsibility that increases as the trip increases, and in this case SecureTrek is not a model that holds back.
SecureTrek, discreet comfort
Black and made of 840D Poly Twill outer material (basically a synthetic nylon material with thin diagonal veins) SecureTrek has dimensions equal to 42 cm in height, by 27 in width and 17 and something deep: the construction is divided between the two large zipped pockets and the front pocket, plus a sturdy upper handle that houses, just below, a small pocket for small objects.
On the side there is a further and drink holder pocket and a mouse holder, plus an opening on the padding on the back for trolleys.
Among the main features to be included, the large capacity of the central pocket, in addition to the presence of the others. The pockets are all lined with padded synthetic material, so much so that not only did we leave the MacBook Pro (during the test we used the new 2016 MacBook with Touch Bar and Touch ID) free in the bag, without an additional case, but also the iPad without cover.
We said large capacity in the central pocket, which easily houses a MacBook Pro (in the dedicated pocket, up to 15 “) but also has space for a lot of additional envelopes for documents, or a second MacBook Pro but which in our case easily housed a spare sweater and an envelope with the day's change. In the same pocket there are two very deep inserts that we used for the MacBook Pro charger and for a series of cables.
The second pocket, attached to the back, is thinner and has a space suitable to accommodate a tablet up to 10 “, but we can also put a laptop or a series of documents here. Just above, a small pocket, always with a zipper, houses what we call “junk”, basically USB sticks, dongles, keys, the iPhone power supply or the iPhone itself. This pocket is convenient because it is always close at hand.
The front pocket is much richer in options: inside there are three capacious pockets suitable for 2.5 “Hark Disks, Battery Packs or small HUBs / Dock (like Kensington's USB-C Mobile Docking Station) and pen and business card pouches. There is also a hook, to which you can attach a cord for keys or other.
In the part that opens there is also a zippered pocket, for the positioning of other small junk.
This pocket is protected by a zipper, but also by a large flap, whose magnetic closure ensures a seal even when the hinges are open.
Power is zero without control
Speaking of hinges, it's important to underline the work done by Kensington to make them screwdriver proof, and once closed there is no way to open them except in the conventional world.
Security is in the DNA of SecureTrek, as is also known from the padlock placed on one side: this, once opened, allows the accommodation of the four zips (ad hoc shaped) when the hinges are closed; once the padlock is closed, it can be locked and protected with both a padlock and the Kensington security cable (cable and lock are not included in the package).
This security allows you to lock the backpack when closed in one or both pockets (but not in the front one) and also to hook the bag to a table or to a tower: we blocked the bag during the train journey to one of the bag racks, being able to sit so much further away .
Also for long journeys, on the back there is a strap to attach the trolley, now a standard for capacious backpacks: the strap, padded ad hoc to ensure a comfortable hold even in summer , also shows a small secret pocket inside, which we did not understand what it is for since it is closed only with a small velcro (perhaps to hold the passport at the airport).
On the shoulder
Used as we said for a trip Thurs for several days, the backpack has proved to be a faithful friend, punctual and equipped for all needs. Discreet, elegant and capacious enough, we put in it not only the MacBook Pro (with power supply) but also several documents, an iPad, a Hard Disk, a USB HUB, a few flash drives, several video connectors (you never know), a sweater, a toothbrush, an underwear change, a portable access point (this here, in detail), and all the connection cables that we can never forget. A bottle of water on the side, mouse on the other and all on the shoulder, without any trolley below, we enjoyed a much more comfortable and streamlined journey, albeit with a full backpack.
In everyday life, the backpack does its job anyway, in the sense that for an outing in the city by public transport carrying a computer, disk and various connectors, the backpack is still very good, but perhaps it suffers from generous dimensions (and for this type of activity perhaps it is better something more subtle and discreet) but this can undoubtedly be a personal point of view.
If the dimensions are not enough, Kensington also offers a superior model, with an internal pocket specifically dedicated to 'travel clothing capable of carrying even an old 17 ″ MacBook Pro.
To find some defects we could say that the flap that covers the front pocket is too easy to open, and also that the internal hook in the same pocket clashes a little if you put a disc immediately under it, but they are completely personal considerations, which can change according to use.
However, it remains a remarkable product, offered among other things at an absolutely competitive price: elegant shape, capacity valid for a trip of a day or two, padlock for security at the airport or train and internal material resistant to scratches and clumsy users.
SecureTrek by Kensington is distributed in Italy from Activate and can be found in all Apple Premium Reseller stores, but can also be found online.
