If there is one thing that distinguishes LaCie products from all the others in the market it is certainly the design: as for this LaCie Mobile Drive 2019 the refinement of original and modern shapes is palpable and appreciated.
In the field of external desktop (or backpack) disks there are fewer novelties than we would hope for, beyond the technological choice between SSD and mechanical: hence the fact that design is still a courageous choice that for who loves aesthetics is a more than valid reason to opt for the French brand.

The corners, carved
Three years have passed since our review of the previous Porche Design Mobile model, and this new LaCie Mobile Drive 2019 is essentially a stylistic reinterpretation, because as far as we can understand there are no major news except the shape and the new colors. .
In fact, out of the box we find the disk and two cables, capable of powering and providing the data connection: one USB-C / USB-C and one USB-C / USB-A, so that each user can choose the preferred cable based on available Mac or PC (faster USB-C, more compatible USB-A).
The design of the new case is now composed of two pieces, one that covers the top and all sides and the second that fits into the lower part (an interlocking almost impossible to notice if you don't look for it, so much so that the disc looks like a single body).
The shape, as you can see from the images of the article, is sharp but the edges are more rounded than the previous model. The connector, on the back, accompanies a small white LED that indicates activity.

Ready for Mac and Windows
Once connected to the Mac, the disk comes with a formatting in ExFAT, a filesystem perfectly compatible with both Windows and macOS, even if this extreme flexibility involves some compromises, such as a certain slowness on apple computers.
We then proceeded to format the disk in HFS + format to make it better suited for use with macOS (discarding the APFS option because with mechanical disks it makes little sense) and the disk immediately showed itself more ready and responsive.
The data of AJA System Test carried out with a Mac mini via USB-C, speaking of a mechanical unit, respond well, considering that it is a 2.5 ″ portable disk, with values obviously far from an SSD unit but good for passive archiving of all types of documents, as well as with a backup via Time Machine.
Conversely, leaving the disk in ExFat you lose a bit in speed but you can use it correctly both from Mac and PC (with NAS, however, you will need to pay a few Euros to have it available, a sign that there is no safe way. ).

Considerations
We used the LaCie Mobile Drive 2019 around Milan and its surroundings for a couple of weeks correctly without problems, both for transporting various documents and for backing up the laptop (via DejaVu).
In our case it was a disk of about 11 millimeters thick (for 170 grams), so it can be slipped into every possible bag, with 1TB of space available, but there are also cuts of 2, 4 and even 5 TB of space (with the same dimensions but doubled thickness), in the colors Lunar Silver (in the photos) and Space Gray.
The price, slightly higher than the average in the market, is justified by the design, the USB-C connector and the metal used, where a more common plastic is usually used for these products.
