Home Hi-Tech Android World ,,,,, The fashion of smartwatches, or in any case of totally digital watches, has now spread for some time. The world of traditional watchmaking is shaking in the face of sacred monsters like the Apple Watch, but there are some manufacturers who are aiming for the hybrid instead. Lenovo Watch X is among them: the dial shows the classic hands of a common watch, but a small LCD display transforms it into a smart watch, devoted above all to physical activity.
How it's done
Lenovo Watch X has a truly classic style. To see it it would not be a smartwatch, but a traditional watch. Circular shape and Milanese loop style strap give it an elegant look. It is a watch that can very well be worn with a shirt and jacket, but that does not disdain a more casual style, such as jeans and polo shirts. The dial is really minimal and shows only four numbers: not the classic “12”, “3”, “6” and “9”, but “2”, “4”, “8” and “10”. There is little else to display on the dial, where only the hands stand out. On the lower part, however, an LCD display that turns on when needed, that is with a rotation of the wrist, or with a click of the side button. It is on this small display that information relating to fitness and health can be viewed.
Functionality
Obviously, the main function is that of a classic watch. With a simple twist of the wrist you will immediately see the time, through hands or even through the display. This is because, among the first digital information that the display returns, there is precisely the time.
By clicking on the side button, on the other hand, you can access the various functions. The first tab is the activity tab, which shows the steps taken, the distance traveled, the calories burned, and the minutes of training. With a second click of the side button, on the other hand, you can access the heartbeat count, thanks to a sensor positioned on the back and which, to tell the truth, seemed to us to be quite precise on almost all occasions, returning plausible results. A third click of the button gives access to sleep data, while a fourth and fifth, respectively, offer access to alarms and ride mode.
What unfortunately is there, but we just haven't been able to make it work, is the weather. Alongside the time and day of the week, the clock also shows weather information: even after pairing with the app, we always received a “no weather service” message for our geographical area. This is probably a mistake due to the fact that Watch X is mainly a watch destined for the Chinese market, but it also works in our markets. A software update will certainly fix it.
It should be noted that the watch is waterproof and has an 8ATM certification, therefore with the possibility of immersing it up to 80 meters: not only, therefore, it will be possible to wear it in the shower, but also while swimming.
Excellent battery life, which the manufacturer ensures is about 45 days. After a month of testing, we still haven't had a chance to recharge the watch.
Notifications
The watch is not only useful for fitness, but the small display also returns the texts of incoming notifications. We tested it with an Android terminal, clearly managing to read incoming messages on smartphones related to Mail, messages, WhatsApp and other apps. Obviously, it is not possible to reply in any way, but it is still a particularly useful option, to avoid taking the watch out of your pocket for every incoming message.
The display is clearly visible indoors or without direct light: in the sun you can still read it, but it is not among the brightest. In any case, just move your wrist so as not to expose the dial to direct rays to be able to view all the information displayed on the screen.
Application
No problem of pairing between smartphone and watch. The apps available on Google and Play Store work well, even if there is a few small clarifications to be made on the time calibration. It seems cumbersome, yet after understanding how to do it turns out to be extremely simple: after pairing, the exact time shown by the clock hands must be entered in the Calibration tab. After entering this data, the hands will start moving automatically until the correct time is reached.
The main screen of the app is quite simple, but with a colorful and modern UI. Here, all the information that is also visible on the dial is grouped, such as steps, calories burned, distance traveled, heartbeats, sleep data. The app, in addition to the clock, adds a sort of diary where you can view the recorded data day by day.
Conclusions
Aesthetically pleasing, with a classic and elegant look, suitable for any type of clothing, Lenovo Watch X is a smart watch with elements of traditional watchmaking. Too bad that some functions, such as the weather one, do not seem to be available to everyone: if you are looking for a classic watch, with some smart elements, then it is an interesting purchase, thanks to a rather aggressive price of just 44 euros.
