LG 32UL950 is nothing new in the market because it has been appearing in the LG price lists for more than a few months, however it still represents a first-rate choice for all users who are looking for the ideal companion for their Mac or desktop PC, but also a desktop solution. for a MacBook Pro.
The writer is in this situation and we wanted to try the LG 32UL950 model both for the quality and for the possibility of using the Thunderbolt 3 connection which, we anticipate, becomes practically irreplaceable after a few minutes, provided that you know how to interpret it correctly.
We paired the LG 32UL950 with a latest generation Mac mini, let's see how it went.
LG 32UL950, the review
Dica Trentadue
The first feature that catches the eye, when the box is still closed, is the size: 32 inches are not few and this is the first display that in many years has managed to make the 27 “iMac look small, which until recently it seemed more than big.
Once the box is opened, we find inside the actual display and the arm, separated: the assembly operation takes a few minutes, and the only attention is paid to the display whose weight is not indifferent (as are the dimensions of the 'power supply, external).
Some subtleties are very nice, like the signature inside the base
Once mounted on the desk, we used the Thunderbolt 3 cable to connect it to a 2018 Mac mini, which I saw right away with no problems.
The display is presented on the front with a black border of just 1 cm, the base in satin metal and the central pin covered in plastic in the same color as the base, while the back is all white, with visible connectors and the LG logo carved into the high part.
The writer finds that the aesthetics of the LG 32UL950 display are beautiful as a whole, even when viewed from behind, with compromises (such as the wide base below) necessary to justify the large top panel, although there have also been opinions quite different between friends and colleagues who have tried it.
The vibrations are contained, considering the size, while we appreciated the convenience of varying the height of the display with a single finger: on the other hand, there is no possibility to turn it, an operation that requires the mobility of the base itself.
At the rear, the connectors are all visible: two USB-A, two Thunderbolt 3, HDMI, Display Port, audio jack and power supply
Flash of thunder
On the back of the panel there are two Thunderbolt 3 connectors: these flank the more common HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4, but in all honesty if you have a computer with Thunderbolt 3 this connection is so convenient that the others become superfluous (even if you can always connect other computers).
In our case, in fact, the Thunderbolt 3 connection carries the video signal (4K), the data signal for the two USB-A ports and for some laptops, even the power supply (which on the Mac mini is not needed).
Via Thunderbolt 3 it is possible to connect up to two displays together for a single computer
For those like us who had a mixed portable / fixed workstation, the convenience of having a single connection cable is incredible (keyboard and mouse in the two USB ports).
Only attention: the two Thunderbolt 3 ports are designed above all to connect two Thunderbolt 3 displays in cascade (which the Mac mini holds very well) while, by also connecting a USB-C disk or other accessory, during startup the system is not showing the laconic message of source not found (but just unplug both connectors and reconnect them correctly in sequence and everything is seen in full force, a sign that the limit is only in the start-up phase).
There are also some problems on the digital audio output via USB, with the Razer Nommo Pro audio system which, although seen correctly, occasionally hesitated a bit to recognize the signal after a period of silence (no problem instead when connected directly to the Mac ).
Perfect for those who love color, but also a little more
The panel is made up of 8,294,400 pixels (3840 × 2160) that use Nano IPS technology to compose one, pass the term, gorgeous 32 ″ 4K with very few rivals in the market, considering all the features.
The contrast of 1300: 1 is excellent and pays tribute to the beauty of macOS in both professional apps and YouTube videos, where we also tried HDR mode, albeit at a consumer level.
For those who do graphics, 98% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space and 135% of the sRGB are an excellent result and even at times excessive for those who deal only with print: among the OSD menus (excellent) there is the possibility to define the display mode, and in the end we liked the DCI-P3 the most, which is the one that gives more credit to the colors even if perhaps too generous for those who do generalist graphics.
The maximum frequency is 60 Hz, and even if it is compatible with AMD's FreeSync technology, it is not the best for serious gamers but still a good result for those who “really” do it for fun.
Finally, a mention of the audio system, which for those who have a Mac mini (or a laptop) becomes important: the integrated 5Watt speakers sound pretty good covering all frequencies and do the job for which they are designed (which is already better than the sound of the Mac mini, for example) but in all honesty, if sound is an integral part of the job (as in the case of a video maker) a couple of external speakers are recommended.
Considerations
Needless to back down, although this LG 32UL950 is nothing new (and we recently highlighted LG's new UltraFine 5K) this model certainly represents the best in the market, with very few rivals paper and impressions in hand.
The panel is large, very large, and of excellent quality, the construction is flawless and the Thunderbolt 3 connection is so comfortable that after 5 minutes it will make you wonder how you have done so far.
The price, we admit, is a bit high and certainly puts it in the “not for everyone” range: 1,299.00 Euros are not few but if you look carefully there are numerous offers in circulation that lower it a little, making it certainly less attractive .
The market is large, diverse and always open, but this model will have a lot to say for several years.
Pro:
• Dual Thunderbolt 3 connection • 32 ″ 4K capable display with excellent color response • Excellent OSD software
Cons:
• A little high price • Not suitable for serious gamblers
Price:
• 1,299.00 Euro
