LG G6, it had been noticed since its presentation at the last MWC, has tried to propose something really new, also facing courageous choices as regards the size and ratio of the screen. We tested it to understand what really sets it apart from everything else.
If we exclude Xiaomi's Mi Mix, which never officially arrived in Italy, LG G6 is the first true new generation smartphone. Comparing the terminal with other top-of-the-range devices, one immediately realizes that we are faced with a new terminal concept, immediately followed by Samsung with S8 and, probably, also by Apple with the next iPhone 8. Needless to say, this what most distinguishes the terminal is the large display: not so much, and not only, for the generous 5.7-inch diagonal, but for the space occupied on the front. The Full Vision display, in fact, covers almost the entire front, eliminating (almost) the side frames, and leaving little space for the upper and lower ones. The result is aesthetically pleasing, but it is also functional and comfortable for everyday use.
The screen has a very particular aspect ratio of 18: 9, with a resolution of 1440 × 2880, and a particularly high pixel density, equal to 564 ppi. It is an IPS, but able to please even AMOLED fans. The blacks are really deep, and the Always On display is testament to that. It has no notification LEDs, but this particular mode leaves the screen always on, where white icons on a completely black background show time and incoming notifications.
LG G6 has really small dimensions if you consider the large 5.7-inch display, equal to 148.9 x 71.9 x 7.9 mm, with a weight of 163 grams. It holds well in the hand and can be used comfortably even with one hand. The screen ratio helps in everyday use and the narrow, yet elongated shape feels like the best possible fit. One wonders why the producers took so long to adopt this solution. We are ready to bet that it will be, shortly, the standard. On the back, a particular non-slip coating makes it particularly easy to handle, and there is no risk of dropping it, as is the case with most aluminum smartphones.
At the level of technical characteristics LG puts inside the tested Qualcomm Snapdragon 821, a Quad-core CPU (2 × 2.35 GHz Kryo & 2 × 1.6 GHz Kryo), assisted by an Adreno 530 GPU. In everyday life, LG G6 is fluid. In some situations, in the most intense use, we noticed a certain overheating on the top, just below the camera, but nothing serious. Inside also 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of integrated memory, expandable via Micro SD slot.
On the back, the fingerprint sensor, well positioned, can be reached easily, and is absolutely precise and responsive. Furthermore, thanks to the knock-code, LG G6 is one of the few terminals that can be unlocked quickly, and in total safety, even when it is lying on a desk with a face up display, a position that makes the sensor on the device inaccessible. rear. The use of the konck code then makes it possible to unlock with a few taps on the screen.
Room
If the Full Vision display is certainly the most valuable feature of the terminal, beautiful to see and use, the camera of the G6 also deserves attention. The rear configuration is dual module, one 13 MP with f / 1.8 aperture and OIS, the other 13 MP, but with f / 2.4 aperture.
The photos are excellent, the camera always captures intense and saturated colors, but what makes the G6 a real ally for those who love photos is the wide-angle sensor, which can be activated both on the rear and front cameras for selfies. In this way it is possible to capture entire panoramas with a single shot, as well as being able to take group photos even with the front camera, without using the classic selfie sticks. From the video point of view, LG G6 allows you to record movies at 2160p resolution at 30fps, or 1080p at 30 / 60fps. The front camera, from 5 MP, with opening f / 2.2. allows you to record at 1080p.
Autonomy
From the standpoint of autonomy, LG G6 offers a 3300 mAh battery, naturally not removable. Considering the large diagonal of the screen, and the resolution, you can be satisfied. Even without shouting for a miracle, LG G6 brings quietly to the evening with a particularly intense use. We managed to get to after dinner without any worries, having used the terminal for numerous calls, long WhatsApp conversations, and also managing to use it as a car navigator and source of music playback with Spotify.
Software
At the software level, it is equipped with Android 7.0, customized by LG. It is possible to set the drawer, or not, as well as change the font or size of the same. The particular aspect ratio of 18: 9 did not give us any problems in everyday use, and all the applications we tested were played in full screen. It is games, above all, that still do not digest 18: 9, as well as YouTube videos, which are played with side black bands. For the rest, all applications are displayed in full screen. In any case, there is a compatibility menu, where you can choose whether to adapt the non-optimized app to the large display, so as to avoid the black bands.
Conclusions
LG G6 does not make extreme choices like the Mi Mix, but it is undoubtedly an appreciable and enjoyable smartphone from every point of view. The Full Vision Display marks the beginning of a new generation of smartphones and it is unlikely that those who have tested it will be able to return again to a terminal with much more eye-catching frames.
It has a price of 749 euros in the list, but just take a look on Amazon to find it also at 590 euros, a price at which the purchase is certainly recommended.
