LG G7 ThinQ review, good and smart

Home Hi-Tech Android World ,,,,,

Cyber Layman has reviewed LG G7 ThinQ, the latest top of the LG range, which enters the world of smartphones with notch, after having invented, with LG G6, the Full smartphone View with 18: 9 aspect, immediately followed last year by Samsung.

LG G7 remains faithful to the previous form factor, but introduces the notch at the top, iPhone X style, extending its form factor to the 19: 9. Here's what we think of it in our review.

Aesthetics

The easiest way to immediately get the idea of how the LG G7 is made is to think about a smaller LG V30, with the notch on the top. Front and back panels are made of glass, with metal frames running around the perimeter. The back is slightly curved and the corners rounded. It holds very well in the hand, better than other top of the range, also due to its size and low weight: 153.2 x 71.9 x 7.9 mm, with 162 grams of weight.

It is not slippery at all and beyond the classic power buttons and volume rocker it also offers a side button to immediately call up Google Assistant. The insertion of this button is a distinctive element of the terminal, which suggests the importance that voice assistants are acquiring in the modern era. It is an interesting quid, which allows you to call Google's help in an easier and faster way, even if to tell the truth the voice command “Ok, Google” continues to be the most immediate solution. The button can also be used in a walkie talkie style, so you can hold the pressure for the duration of the voice command. At the moment, it is not possible to remap the key with other quick functions.

The build quality of LG G7 ThinQ is excellent . The terminal appears robust, and its size more than other top of the range makes it easier to use, even compared to LG V30. The typical ports are all there: on the bottom the speaker, the USB-C port, and the 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Display

LG G7 is equipped with a 19.5: 9 panel, with 6.1-inch diagonal. On the top there is the front notch, which can be partially hidden by software. Unfortunately, the solution is not ideal, as it is possible to hide the notch only on the Home, but not on third-party apps, as is the case on other smartphones: simply inconceivable. The areas around the notch can also be customized with different colors and shades: even in this case the choice is at least questionable, because in this way one only emphasizes a notch, which many would like to be able to hide.

In any case, beyond the notch, which according to taste, the LCD display is really optimal. It is an LCD display, but it has nothing to envy to other OLED displays. Particularly sharp, it offers a resolution of 3,120 x 1,440, with really bright and sunny colors, which certainly do not pale in front of an OLED. The colors of the display can be changed to your liking through the display settings, with RGB options and sliders to change the color temperature: the default settings, however, are already particularly appreciable and satisfactory.

The brightness, which reaches 1,000 nits, pushes the display towards a totally positive judgment. In this way, even in direct sunlight, especially outdoors, the LG G7 display remains very visible.

Technical features

On paper LG G7 has all the most advanced technical features currently available on the market, or almost. And in fact, while the processor is the Snapdragon 845, currently top of the range, the GB of RAM in support are “only” 4GB, half despite terminals that enjoy 8 GB of RAM, however less than the 6GB that are offered by almost all the other top of the range competitors. In any case, this is only a detail that remains on paper, because in everyday use it is difficult to notice the difference between a 4 GB smartphone and another with 6 GB of RAM.

The terminal is fluid, runs well, and only from time to time have we encountered some application crashes, including Google Assistant or Google Maps . These are not crashes due to technical specifications, but to some small operating system bugs.

Battery

At battery level, it is equipped with a 3,000mAh battery. You get there in the evening with difficulty, especially if you stress the terminal and keep the brightness high. Furthermore, if you want to use the terminal for gaming use, or for watching streaming content, be sure to have to put your hand to the charger at least once a day. Fortunately, charging is really fast via Quick Charge 4.0, as well as having support for wireless wireless charging.

Audio

Where LG has concentrated its efforts most with the LG G7 is the audio department. There's Quad DAC support, which offers above-average sound quality, less distortion, less noise, and more dynamic range that owners of high-impedance headphones are sure to appreciate. In addition to the quad DAC, LG G7 implements support for DTS: X 3D Surround, which is designed to provide a surround sound experience through stereo speakers or headphones.

Camera

With LG G7, the company has also updated its front camera. G7 ThinQ features an 8 megapixel selfie camera. Additionally, LG has also added portrait mode to the G7, a first for LG smartphones. However, the blur is not perfect. In some shots it is difficult to blur the background in a credible way, even if for most situations the final result is convincing.

LG's strength linked to the multimedia department continues to be the choice of the wide-angle lens for one of the two rooms. The field of view has been reduced to 107 degrees compared to the previous generation, and this to eliminate some small distortion on the edges of the photo.

Both rear camera sensors are 16 megapixel. Specifically, the main sensor has an aperture of f / 1.6, compared to the wide-angle lens from f / 1.9, which also enjoys the OIS. The main advantage to the wide angle is, of course, the ability to capture entire panoramas with a single shot, as well as to take group selfies without special sticks.

The photos are really good, full of details, with bright colors, even if true to reality. The camera is supported by artificial intelligence, so the G7 is able to recognize the scene being photographed, to automatically choose the best shooting settings.

In some cases, to be honest, the shots without using the AI camera are still preferable, but overall the G7 takes great photos. The dynamic range is above average, and it retains a good amount of detail in the highlights and shadows. In low light conditions, the camera retains many details and even part of the color: in this LG G7 manages to keep noise to a minimum, at least on the main sensor. Results with the wide angle lens tend to accentuate the noise.

If the scene is too dark, the Super brightness mode of the camera helps: in this case the smartphone uses pixel binning like Huawei P20 Pro, which combines four pixels into one. The photos taken with this mode therefore have a lower resolution and the results, at least in some cases, seem a bit pastel.

Security

LG G7 offers two different security systems. The first is the one based on Touch ID, positioned on the back. It is not a clickable button, it can be reached very well with the finger and it is reliable: it works 10 times out of 10. It is, however, not the fastest on the market.

Another unlocking system is the Face Unlock. It works well, in the sense that it recognizes the face most of the time, even if it's not super fast. He is not, however, absolutely sure: we managed to fool him simply with a selfie. By showing the smartphone a photo, after a few seconds you will be able to unlock it.

Software

The LG G7 ThinQ software experience will be familiar to those who have already tested the company's terminals. LG's software has made significant progress over the years, with less bloatware, and a cleaner interface. In the opinion of the writer, however, it is not the top, with menus full of so many options that it is easy to get lost among the menus.

LG G7 software is based on Android 8.0 Oreo, and in some situations it shows some small uncertainty. The one-handed mode, which should be activated via a slide of the virtual keys does not seem to respond properly. It has already been said about the option to disable the notch, which only works on the Home and not with third-party apps.

In short, the software is enjoyable, but in some respects it is far from the experience stock which is still preferable.

Conclusions

LG G7 is an absolutely valid terminal. Fortunately, the list price of 850 euros remains, in fact, only “list”. It can already be found online for much less, for example on Amazon for around 630 euros. It doesn't do anything innovative, but it has a really nice display, and it holds exceptionally well in the hand. The dedicated button to call up Assistant is appreciable, as is the photographic department, thanks to the wide-angle lens that allows different shots compared to competitors.

The battery life could be better, but what LG will have absolutely improving are the options to hide the notch: if there is such an option it must necessarily work also on third-party apps, otherwise the entire homogeneity of the system is affected.

LG G7 yes buy on Amazon for about 630 euros.
