Today we tell you about our one month experience with LG Wing about a year after its launch, between lights, shadows and closures. Find out everything you need to know in our review.
Device and packaging
In the package we find:
Two plastic screen protectors (for both displays), Adhesive cover, Pin to extract the sim trolley, Battery charger with 25 W type-C output (full charge in one hour). Type-C type-C cable. This is an important device: in every sense. Double, heavy, stretched and slippery, but it also has flaws. In the hand, its 260 grams are felt as well as the length due to the aspect ratio of the 19.5: 9 display. However, this last feature makes it quite tight, so much so that it can hold well in the hand. If we also add the “adhesive” cover, we are talking about a nice brick. The cover itself is in my opinion useless. It does not protect the most delicate part of the device, that is the edges of the main screen, for which a fall from bed height is enough to bruise. All these are trifles if we stop to admire the b-side: feminine color? Absolutely not. You will appreciate it over time, it is capable of reflections ranging from pink, purple, blue to white. At night it becomes a torch, reflects the ambient light a lot. In a word: beautiful, thanks also to its satin and matte finish. The photographic sector protrudes a lot from the body, so much so that it dances on a table like the uncle we all have who gets drunk at weddings. The solution for the smartphone is the cover, which equalizes the difference in height, for your uncle it is rehabilitation, keep him away from the open bar or not invite him to the wedding.
There were also problems of use: I am right-handed, but I use smartphones with my left hand. With this it was really difficult to rotate the main screen with one hand. Furthermore, while with the screen closed it is easy to reach the power key and the volume keys, with the screen open it is not impossible, but at least a somoda, hypothetical solution: move them.

Display
There are two displays on the device:
Main: 6.8 ”P-OLED in 19.5: 9 aspect ratio with 1080 x 2460 pixel 395 ppi resolution; Secondary: 3.9 ″ OLED with 1080 x 1240 pixel resolution. We are talking about excellent panels visible in all light conditions with excellent chromatic fidelity. The main one is defined with perfect visibility of the Ambient Display as well.
Black edges are prominent on both displays, I would have expected more effort. I am not a lover of the curvature of the display, but this makes the smartphone slimmer, less brick and you do not get lost in involuntary touches, still managing to hold this “slippery piece of ice” well in your hand.
Bug The dual screen solution? Brilliant or ata? In today's smartphones it is really difficult to separate the two. Often excellent devices are lost on certain details. It must be specified, however, over the years, that solutions introduced by other brands were then embraced by Google and Android in the first place, only to be reflected in most of the companies that use the green robot. Let's talk about the notch, sensor under the display, folding displays etc. Where do I want to go? Even this “type of sliding phone” could have taken hold, such a solution could have become mainstream. In fact, in my opinion, much more comfortable and apt, above all more resistant, than folding smartphones. Unfortunately, this idea has remained a niche, proposed only by LG, no other brand has followed it. Therefore? Many apps that could have found a match in the dual display have not been optimized. For example, as in the shots below, it is possible to use the two screens for writing, but only with the LG keyboard. The same functionality is not supported by the GBoard that I use. How many games could have been matched by the two screens? Maybe by moving the various joysticks or buttons on one of them that would no longer invade the view and play area?
This smartphone was a missed opportunity, but not due to LG's demerit. Unfortunately, those who dare risk making mistakes or not being understood, as in this case.
Nevertheless, the double display finds different applications:
Views of two apps: one for display, Easy typing with a full screen dedicated to the keyboard, Commands for Youtube videos, Touchpad (useful? I don't think), Second screen off for improve grip, game settings visible while gaming. I found the setup configuration a little less immediate when both screens are active. Because? Let's go back to the previous discussion: many apps are not ready for this type of display, so you had to manually force them for this type of use. To be honest, this wasn't even possible for all applications.
Photos & videos The real strength of this smartphone is the Gimbal Camera, a real killer feature of the LG device. Activated by opening the camera with both displays active. Believe me, this alone is worth the ticket price.
Magnetically stabilized cameras, NASA super accelerometers with a thousand thousand axes that stabilize the optical groups with the Earth's axis as if it were Antani with a premature supercazzola with right-hand chiselling? No. Simply all thanks to the third lens: the 12 MP Ultra Wide Gimbal Motion Camera (as LG calls it, who like short names) with six-axis stabilization system that restores an incredible shot. The available commands are then the same as for a Gimbal. With three main video recording modes: first person view, pan follow and follow. It is possible to bring out super stabilized videos, there is also the shutter button for photos, if we want to capture a snapshot without closing the smartphone. Unfortunately, only the aforementioned objective can be used in this mode.
Dual Recording is what we have been waiting for a long time on smartphones, the ability to record from front and rear cameras at the same time. A convenient feature, not every day, but it often makes a difference.
The general quality of Photos and Videos is very good. I was able to make a comparison often with shots produced by my girlfriend's iPhone 12 Pro Max, we are almost on the same level. Good colors, sharpness and saturation. Whites tend a little too cold, often in a comparison between shots, Apple's were warmer, more harmonious and closer to reality, unlike LG's often colder and duller.
Too bad for the shots in low light, I explain. In low light conditions, such as at night with no light sources nearby creating cones of light and shadow, the software works well by lengthening the exposure times and capturing more light. The same goes for night shots with a lot of ambient light without too many areas of light and shadow, with a uniform environment in short, the software still works well. So discreet shots, with a lot of background noise, but good. The donkey falls where it shouldn't: in uneven light conditions the software is not able to act only on the darkest areas and leave the already illuminated ones unchanged to make the photo uniform. The result are bad shots that drop the overall judgment of the camera that had stood out so far. This becomes even more obvious when you don't use the flash for selfies. Ok, you have region, the subject of the selfie is what it is, but focus on the light of the shot.
For the rest, the selfies are good and the portrait mode manages well to outline the face with some simaptic goodies that will allow you to pull out some portraits different from the usual.

Performance and autonomy The 4000 mAh battery allowed me to arrive in the evening in any situation and condition of use. I have never had the need or the need for a charge in the middle of the day or in the afternoon for fear of not arriving after dinner time (which here in the south is closer to breakfast time than lunch time).
The performance of the device on the whole is good, it practically never heats up and is always ready and reliable. As well as the software, not very far from that stock of mom Google. A little too many pre-installed apps, including some that you really will never touch.
So far, like all devices, it has presented some criticisms, but I liked the device. We come now to the painful notes.
The fingerprint sensor under the display appeared to be anything but reliable. In particular, in one day it abandoned me completely until the device was restarted. On the whole he seemed unresponsive. Assisted by the lack of face recognition, it made me turn up my nose. The audio is only mono: it often happened to me, with both screens active, to watch videos on youtube by placing the speaker on the bed or on the blankets and not hear anything anymore. Bug Pop-up Camera Instagram: certainly something about the app and not the smartphone. From the home of the app, returning to the home of the smartphone or to multitasking, the pop-up camera made its appearance without anyone having called it into question.
Unfortunately, I'm a fan of updates and latest software releases. I suffered a lot when I noticed that the software of the device is still based on Android 10, one year after its launch and with Android 12 just presented. LG's abandonment of its smartphone division with the consequent promise of guaranteed updates for its devices is so unreliable.
Conclusions LG Wing, if we want it too innovative, has not made its way into the very populated and very complicated smartphone market today. LG has a long history of innovation behind it, but innovation isn't everything. If your name is not Apple, it is difficult for other companies to follow or copy your work. Too difficult to carve out a slice of the market being too far ahead and always pursuing different innovations, alone, until it loses its catchment area. We hope that the company's efforts can be focused on something else.
Let's get back to us: is LG Wing worth buying? Yes, if you find it under 600 euros. I think it is the most appropriate figure for this device. The introductory price as for other LG smartphones was not very aggressive, now at half the price it is worth giving it a thought. We are talking about a smartphone that could be the king of the mid-range, always reliable with double screen, Gimbal Camera and that takes great photos.
Will you consider it for your next purchase?
