Talking about the Logitech G903, top of the range mouse from the G line of the Swiss-American house, is not easy at all: characterized by an aggressive look but in line with the needs of the eSport sector to which it is dedicated, it has characteristics of the highest level, so much so that in all honesty it is practically impossible to find a fault here.
Of course, you have to have big hands, an important budget for a mouse and the desire to dominate a product like perhaps none in the market, but satisfaction is guaranteed and the certainty of having an extra weapon during gaming sessions, even wirelessly, is incomparable for those who play seriously.
Whether you are a technological exterminator of alien races, an expert in swordplay or short-range combat, a necromancer in a demonic wasteland or a fan of cosmic sagas, this product will be your best friend, and an indispensable weapon after a few time.
But in the same way we think that the mouse is an interesting solution also for the Mac user who wants to take an extra step in the hardware equipment compared to that proposed by Apple (which is not absolutely suitable for the eSport environment, and in some ways even too simple for the professional one) with a quality product without compromises, completely customizable even if this aspect is, perhaps, the only one that can be improved.
Logitech G903, an icon for eSports
The esports sector is experiencing significant growth here in Italy too and the recent news that the Olympic committee will evaluate the his candidacy for the Paris 2024 games only confirms a phenomenon that, starting among the youngest, is inexorably changing the world of computers.
Logitech G903 proves to be a more than valid icon since box, where the refinement of lines and materials highlights a product that is also made to be looked at.
Inside we find the mouse, the spare parts for the keys (as we will see later) in an elegant plastic binder, the charging cable and the USB-A antenna for wireless use with a convenient grommet to save a door.
The shape is undoubtedly aggressive but inviting: the choice to opt for an ambidextrous mouse was courageous, but appreciated, given that despite this, the grip is firm and comfortable, and does not suffer from the typical lack of reception of right-handed mice.
Seven of the eleven mouse buttons are positioned in the upper part, while the other four are lateral in pairs : inside the package there are two “caps” to replace the buttons that we do not use, in order to offer the mouse a more sober appearance on that side (optional operation, the buttons can still be disabled via software).
At the top of the mouse there is RGB LED lighting at millions of c oor involving the Logitech G-brand and the three-cleat indicator, which natively indicates the resolution adopted (which can be changed on the fly). The lighting is controlled by the drivers, even for Mac.
At the bottom there is a small weight, circular in shape, which can be removed making the mouse lighter to move, for those who want it a feeling different from the standard one: we without weight liked it less, if only for the need for precision necessary in some titles, but we understand that for those who do eSports marathons a light mouse is less tired in the long run.
Finally, the Micro USB connector for charging peeks out on the front: this, although standard, has two side tabs that slip inside the mouse and guide the connection, but in the same way make the cable useless outside the mouse.
The cable, however, is of excellent workmanship and braided, quite long and rigid, with also a fabric cable gland for connection to the computer case (typically for PCs Windows) so as not to clutter.
The materials, albeit in plastic smooth black, they are of exquisite workmanship and the handle is firm and comfortable even with sweaty hands: it does not slip and the height is sufficient for a quick grip when you leave the mouse for the keyboard, and then return to it in a blind movement.
Basically the materials, the shape, the lights, the cables and the flexibility of the design fully meet the expectations we had before the test, in a mouse that is not only the flagship Logitech (gaming and not) but also one of the reference points for the category.
Test drive
Once turned on and connected to the Mac this is immediately seen as a traditional mouse and lets you drive even without a driver, a factor to consider for those who appreciate shape and precision but do not have the desire and time to deal with such a detailed setting as that of the Logitech G903.
Once the drivers have been installed however, a real world opens up: the conf Initial configuration is not easy, because the options are many and the drivers offer a somewhat difficult interface in some steps. Otherwise, nothing prevents you from installing the drivers and trusting the pre-packaged options (but it's a real shame, especially for those who want to take advantage of the full power of the mouse).
The first aspect that you notice immediately is that it is possible to choose between five sets of keys, each with different specific assignments (convenient factor when playing multiple titles), even if it does not seem possible to associate a set to a specific App or game (so that the change activates dynamically).
The possibility of registering the sets inside the mouse itself is very interesting, so that once connected to another computer, the device retains its characteristics.
We really liked the coloring options (which can also be synchronized with other devices such as the PowerPlay mat) and the ability to create of the test sessions in which the drivers in practice “record” the activity showing the statistics of the keys, which I know no more presses and for how long, in order to help the user in the best possible configuration.
The technical characteristics speak of a resolution of 12.000 dpi, not the best on the market but still a resolution enough high even for 5K displays: together with an ultrapooling frequency at 1000 Hz (via USB, we did not find references in wireless mode, even if in our tests we did not detect any gaps in this regard even in Wi-Fi) and a maximum acceleration of 40G (when on a Logitech mat) we can say that on the market the products capable of rivaling this can be counted with one hand (and not figuratively).
Once the configuration is finished we put to test the Logitech G903 in different areas: between Starcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, EVE online and Torchlight, all alternating for use with the Finder, Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom and several other utilities that we consume daily on the Mac, both in use via Wi-F i that wired.
A perfect experience, a superfine quality that emerges clearly in every step: the switch between cable and Wi-Fi is instantaneous and completely transparent, the perfect set transition, the quality of the keys very good and the precision remained high even on surfaces that were not really suitable.
On a compatible pad we had the best results, but we appreciated the qualities even when used on a MacBook Pro resting on a carpeted surface or on raw wood.
Also notable is the battery life: Logitech claims a total duration of 35 hours wirelessly, in our tests the mouse reached two days , however it must be said that some options can affect the duration, such as the lighting of the upper LEDs, the presence of the weight and the resolution in use (which affects the processor).
We have not had the opportunity to try the optional PowerPlay mat, which allows continuous use of the product to (without lower weight) thanks to the induction charge.
Conclusions
As we had anticipated at the beginning, this Logitech G903 is a mouse to which finding a fault is, in no uncertain terms, really difficult: the wireless and wired operation is flawless, the very high precision and the firm and decisive grip. If we look carefully, a facelift of the driver window would do well, but it is a procedure we have to deal with very rarely, once the sets have been defined, basically everything is done from the mouse.
This quality translates into a very important cost, useless to go around it, 184.99 Euros are not low for a mouse but it is obvious that here we are talking about a product without compromises, an icon of the sector.
Readers can find it on Amazon with a small discount, with also the PowerPlay mat for wireless charging, but the mouse should also be present in the most popular catane of Italian department stores.
