Meat processing multinational JBS paid $ 11 million in ransom after a cyber attack

On Wednesday, the US company controlled by Brazilian multinational JBS, the first in the world in the meat processing sector, said it had paid 11 million dollars (9 million euros) in ransom for a cyber attack it suffered last week. JBS USA CEO Andre Nogueira said the attack prevented slaughterhouses from operating in the US and Australian plants for one day.

Like the cyber attack last May 7 against the systems of the Colonial Pipeline, one of the largest and most important oil pipelines in the United States, this too was carried out with “ransomware”, or malicious software installed by hackers that blocks some data , which are unlocked only with the payment of a ransom (in English ransom). According to preliminary investigations, no company data or employee data were stolen in the attack. Reuters wrote that according to a person involved in the investigation, the attack was carried out by a group of hackers who have ties to Russia and used the REvil, or Sodinokibi ransomware.
