Messenger gets end-to-end encryption for calls

Facebook began testing end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for voice and video calls on Messenger in late 2019. Now, this new security mode is available to everyone.

The release means that anyone will not be able to intercept calls made through Messenger. Facebook launched E2EE amid the growing interest in voice and video calls, with over 150 million calls on Messenger made every day for the past 12 months.

The new encryption capabilities are complemented by extended controls for end-to-end encrypted hide-away messages. Facebook now allows you to choose the amount of time, between 5 seconds and 24 hours, before the automatic deletion of messages. The company will also test a new feature to filter “who can reach their chat list, who goes to the request folder and who can't send messages”.
