Meta threatens to shut down Facebook and Instagram in Europe

There is a point in Meta's annual report for the United States Securities and Exchange Commission last Thursday that made all the insiders jump in their chairs. Meta declares in fact to consider “probable” not to be able to offer “a certain number of our most significant products and services”, including Facebook and Instagram, in Europe if a new transatlantic data transfer framework is not adopted .

The issue is the usual diatribe between Zuckerberg and Europe on the European data regulations that prevent Meta from transferring the data of Europeans on the American servers . Meta states that the ability to process user data across countries is critical to its business both to function and to targeting of ads . European laws are oriented to protect the privacy of users, by keeping their data within the jurisdiction of the EU and since Meta does not was able to reach new data sharing agreements , threatens to move away from the continent with Facebook and Instagram.

Meta clarifies that it is optimistic to be able to reach new agreements in 2022 , but otherwise, no Facebook and Instagram in Europe. London financial newspaper CityAM contacted Meta and Nick Clegg , the company's vice president of global affairs urged regulators to take a proportionate and pragmatic approach to minimize disruption for the many thousands of businesses that, like Facebook, have relied on these bona fide mechanisms to transfer data safely and securely .

Many businesses rely on Facebook and Instagram ads to connect with customers and sell their products and it is highly unlikely that our continent is anywhere near. day to day without these social media , but surely the relationship is a way of the company to send a clear message and, why not, a threat to Europe .
