HomeMacityAndroid World We have been repeating this for a long time now when we are going to review a pair of TWS earphones. The market for these headphones has become a jungle, and it can be really difficult to navigate through the magnum sea of exponents in attendance. Yet, if you are looking for an alternative solution to AirPods, both for connection functionality and above all for design, Xiaomi Mi True 2S are the right choice. Here because.
Many of the true wireless earphones on the market are in ear, AirPods Pro style, while the protagonists of the semi in ear scene, just like Apple's standard AirPods, are not so many. Upon opening the package you will be invaded by the classic Xiaomi style, with an absolutely linear and minimal presentation of the product.
By opening the small cardboard package, in fact, you will immediately have contact with the white case, and the earphones positioned a little lower, outside the case. Beyond the manual and the USB-C charging cable, the sales package offers nothing else. There are, of course, no silicone nubs, as they are semi-in-ear earphones.
Xiaomi Mi Air 2S offer the classic design that the brand has maintained since the beginning for this series of earphones. They offer a rather plump and slightly squared shape, which still makes them perfectly recognizable, unlike most of the in-ear competitors, which instead all resemble each other.
On the front of the charging case there is a small status LED, while on the right side there is the button for pairing with the smartphone. This allows, in addition to the classic combination, also an AirPods style connection, but only with smartphones that mount Xiaomi's MIUI on board. In the latter, simply press the button, activate the BT on the phone, to see a pop up appear with the earphones, just like when you connect AirPods to iPhone.
On the back of the case there is a small logo with the lightning bolt symbol. This is not just an aesthetic choice: this serves to make the user understand immediately that the case can also be recharged wirelessly.
Charging of the case is completed in about an hour, and ensures the possibility of recharging the earphones for about 4 times, thus bringing the total listening to over 20 hours, considering that for each charge it is possible to use the earphones for about 4 hours and a half.
How they are made
Net of what may be personal tastes, those who want an alternative to AirPods can only take them into consideration. They are quite chubby, but they certainly have a well defined style. They are beautiful to look at, elegant and extremely modern, like many of the Xiaomi peripherals.
These are earphones with a rather pronounced stem, which therefore will stand out in the ears, while on the top the chubby earphone has no silicone rubber. It is, in fact, a semi-in-ear device, which can certainly be recommended to anyone who can't stand headphones in ear, considered by many to be too invasive for the ear.
Of course, the semi in ear headset has pros and cons. The wearability, for example: they are less invasive, and probably less annoying than the in ear, but they are not as stable as the TWS with silicone pads. Furthermore, the fact of being six in ear excludes total isolation, and as far as it fits perfectly in the ear, you will always have the perception of the loudest external noises. Of course, they are not recommended for running.
The materials used are plastic, but of excellent workmanship and matte finish, so as not to retain fingerprints. The earphones enjoy rather precise touch controls, also due to the fact that the area to be touched is wider than apple's AirPods. The functions offered are, however, very minimal, and there is no possibility to control the volume directly from the earphones.
By double-tapping both the left and right earbuds during the call, you can answer or end the call. Double-tapping the right earphone puts audio playback into Play / Pause, while double-tapping the left earphone activates the voice assistant of the smartphone.
The Xiaomi Mi Earphones 2S enjoy Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity with a range of up to 10 meters. During our tests we were able to appreciate excellent stability in the connection with the smartphone, and an almost non-existent latency.
From this point of view, they have undoubtedly proved to be the best headphones in this price range: there is no lag between audio and video, when multimedia content is played, as well as when playing with the smartphone.
The headphones benefit, only with MIUI devices, of LHDC technology, which allows for even lower latency and effective synchronization between sound and video. To be fair, however, even non-Xiaomi smartphones have managed to offer almost zero latency.
Furthermore, it should be noted that the Xiaomi earphones use an enhanced dual-up chip, with support for binaural synchronous transmission technology, which allows simultaneous audio transmission to both earphones, rather than bouncing the sound from one earphone to the ear. other.
How they sound
We were really happy with the sound quality of these headphones from the very first approach. When playing any genre of music we enjoyed the quality of the 14.2mm drivers with dynamic composite voice coil and 32 Ohm impedance.
The sound that comes out of the earphones is really full-bodied, with marked basses that still manage not to be predominant on the other frequencies. Furthermore, at the maximum listening volume we did not detect any trace of distortions.
We carried out several tests to compare these earphones with others in the same price range. Although Mi Earphones 2S are semi in ear, we perceived a greater composite of sound, compared to other more insulating earphones. There is no ANC, it is true, but the sound of these Xiaomi headphones is so clean and vigorous, that it still manages to isolate from the outside.
The quality is also felt during calls, thanks to the presence of microphones for each headset (the earphones can also be used individually), which use ENC technology for noise reduction. Since these are semi in-ear headphones, it is normal to appreciate more intense ambient noises, but overall the call is always clean.
Conclusions
If you are looking for a pair of semi in ear earphones, which recall the AirPods aesthetics, but without giving up its own personality, Xiaomi Mi Earphones 2S are certainly the best economic choice.
At this list price we think there can be nothing higher. The earphones enjoy a fairly high maximum listening volume, excellent performance in terms of sound cleaning, even during calls.
Earphones 2S are truly remarkable from a qualitative point of view, both for the construction and for the audio performance. This certainly justifies the absence of deeper touch controls, and the absence of the impossibility of controlling the volume via soft touch on the stem.
