Microsoft is completely redesigning its Edge browser, basing it on the same system as Google Chrome

Microsoft has announced that it is working to make a completely new version of Edge, its browser for Windows 10: it will be based on Chromium, the same system that runs Google's Chrome browser. The new Edge will also be compatible with previous versions of Windows, making life easier for many companies, which until now had to deal with different Microsoft browsers depending on the operating system used. Crushed by competition from Chrome and Firefox, Edge has never been very successful and has often been shown to have serious compatibility issues, especially with sites offering web applications. The move to Chromium will allow Microsoft to offer a more open product, in terms of code, while at the same time having a common foundation to Chrome and fewer compatibility issues. The Edge branding will remain, but the browser will be redone in its entirety and a first version is expected to be available in 2019, although there is no official date yet.
