The technology company Microsoft said it will buy Github, a popular site for software developers that allows them to share and experiment with their program source codes. Microsoft said it will pay $ 7.5 billion, and the acquisition will be completed by the end of the year. Github will continue to work independently, Microsoft said.
According to estimates, Github is used by 28 million users, representing over 1.5 million companies, including Microsoft. Nat Friedman, founder of mobile software development service Xamarin (which was bought by Microsoft in 2016), will be the new head of Github, replacing Chris Wanstrath, who will hold another executive position.
Currently Github is free, but offers various paid services. After the news of the acquisition by Microsoft spread, many users of the site have expressed concerns about the possibility that the site will undergo negative transformations.
