Moto G5 Plus review: substance wins over form

Home Hi-Tech Android World ,,,,, With the arrival on the market of the top of the range Samsung and LG the user's attention has shifted a bit to smartphones without frames, all display. This is probably why the G5 Plus feels lacking in terms of aesthetics. It is, however, a diesel: slow start, but in daily use rich in content and substance.

Aesthetics

Opening the package does not have the “wow” effect, which instead return the latest top of the range. It is also true, however, that the Moto G5 Plus is not a top of the range, but struggles more in the mid-range range, managing to stand out from many points of view in everyday use. It is a 5.2-inch, a feature that makes it in itself attractive to those who want a terminal with a large display, without however getting to the 5.5-inch phablets. It has pronounced bezels, especially the upper and lower ones, although overall it offers a clean front. On the other hand, the back is particular, with a design that hides the antennas very well, transforming them into an aesthetic element, which accompanies the lines of the terminal, with a large protruding camera, which however does not look bad.

Moto G5 Plus

A functional Touch ID

With G5 Plus Motorola also welcomes and responds to the justified criticisms of those who, in previous models, had not at all appreciated the uselessness of the front button including the fingerprint sensor. This time, in fact, not only the button is used to quickly unlock the device, but also serves as the Home button, back and options, thanks to an original gesture system. In this way it will also be possible to hide the soft touch keys, to take advantage of the large display in its entirety.

Technical features

Technical characteristics in hand, Moto G5 is located in the mid-range, without disfiguring when compared with any top of the range. It has dimensions of 150.2 x 74 x 7.7 mm, with a weight of 155g. In the hand it holds particularly well, it does not slip and there is a feeling of strength and solidity. The display is a 5.2-inch IPS, with Full HD resolution and a pixel density of 424. The colors are very good, but what amazed us most is its readability even in direct sunlight.

The Snapdragon 625 processor, Octa-core at 2.0 GHz, together with the Adreno 506 GPU and the 3 GB make the phone run absolutely smoothly, without any lag, in any situation. It is a terminal that allows you to take advantage of the entire Android ecosystem, without any limitation. Among the details that differentiate this from many other terminals, a SIM trolley that can contain, in addition to two SIMs at the same time, also a MicroSD. It may seem like a trifle, but it is not: Moto 5G is the smartphone for those who need a double SIM, without giving up memory expansion. In fact, it could be useful, because of the 32 GB of integrated storage, over 7GB are occupied by the operating system.

Multimedia

The multimedia department of the device is entrusted to a 12 MP rear camera, with opening f / 1.7, autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flash and auto-HDR. It is capable of shooting videos up to 4K at 30 fps, while the front one mounts a 5 MP sensor with f / 2.2 aperture. Considering the price range, Moto G5 Plus takes more than satisfactory photos, able to capture good detail, and to return particularly bright colors during daytime photos. Below is a gallery of photos taken during our test.

Software

From a software point of view, the Moto G5 Plus returns an Android experience that is practically stock and particularly close to Google's Pixels. The default launcher, in fact, offers the gesture with an upward slide to call up the drawer with all the applications, but it is the Moto customizations that give something more. Among the most useful gestures in everyday life, the double hammer, which allows you to immediately start the flashlight, or the one that starts the camera by shaking the terminal. They are not comfortable, but they actually work in 100% of cases, thus making them perfectly usable in everyday use.

The ambient display is also an added value. The moment you pick up your mobile phone, the display will show the time and incoming notifications with white icons on a completely black background. It is a system that allows you to immediately view important information, without turning on the display and, therefore, without burdening the battery. The latter, from 3000 mAh, allows you to arrive in the evening with a good dose of percentage, thanks to a Snapdragon processor that perfectly contains consumption.

The telephone part is passed with full marks. In conversation the voice is clean and crystalline, at least also the speakerphone volume and excellent management of the two SIMs, which as previously mentioned, does not exclude the contextual use of the microSD. We did not encounter any reception problems during our tests. Also from this point of view, therefore, a reliable phone, which works really well.

Conclusions

Underneath a dress, which will not be that of the most elegant gala evening, Moto G5 Plus works really well in any department: precise the fingerprint sensor, good room, excellent gestures, appreciable display, always fluid and responsive the terminal in general. For 300 euros, this is the price at which it is found on Amazon, it is a cell phone rich in substance, which knows its stuff and can be used very well. Motorola has staked everything on usability. The bet is won.

On Amazon it currently costs 305 euros; you can buy it directly from here.
