The support is fixed to the ventilation grid through a practical vice . The solid grip is ensured by some rubber inserts and by a clip that allows you to tighten them to one of the rods of the ventilation outlet. The maximum opening is about 3 mm, sufficient to guarantee full compatibility with most of the automotive ventilation systems on the market.
The stability of the support is further strengthened by a rubber cover which covers the surface in contact with the rest of the grid. The clip designed for smartphone attachment is connected to the vice through a small ball head which allows you to orient the phone in any position, horizontally and vertically, as well as tilt it slightly ( about 30 degrees) in all directions, thus being able to adapt the usability of the phone screen for both the driver and the passenger at his side, while keeping the system locked to one of the grids in the center of the passenger compartment.
The smartphone attachment clip is very solid and the spring that allows it to open is rather rigid, almost difficult to adjust with one hand. The system is quite reliable as there is a metal skeleton to keep the two parts locked: we are therefore not dealing with a totally plastic system and which with continuous use could therefore yield more easily.
The interior is completely covered with a rubberized layer with an embossed texture characterized by a series of lines that greatly improve its adherence, especially if it is a smartphone with a slippery shell like the aluminum of the iPhone. The opening is very wide and can therefore ensure the coupling of even rather bulky phablets, as long as the width does not exceed 8.5 centimeters .
We used it for some driving around town with our iPhone 7 without any problems. The support remains stable and the grip in the grid does not give an inch, even if you try to tear it off voluntarily. Even the ball head, although it does not have a locking system, is still stable while maintaining the desired position, i.e. without tilting, for example when driving along rough roads or making sharp turns.
Conclusions and price
Mpow Air Vent is among the best mounts of its kind we have tried to date. The plastic is very sturdy and the large rubber coatings ensure a firm and secure grip. The strong point is in the grille grip which locks excellently. If you are looking for a support of this type you should not desist from buying, especially for the price: it costs only 7.99 euros.
