With the advent of smartphones, workouts are monitored directly from the wrist, but those who have not yet purchased one and prefer to use smartphone sensors to keep track of their workouts can then rely on Mpow's smartphone armband which, at a very low price, allows you to securely lock the phone around your arm, benefiting from a series of comforts for the management of keys and headphones.

How is it made

This accessory, which we got to try in the last few days, as we said it stands out for an excellent relationship between quality and price and also a good attention to detail, starting with the choice of materials. The band is made of neoprene, including the pocket in which the iPhone is inserted, which guarantees a good adaptability to the device (we were able to insert one with a “slim” case and glass film without difficulty) and at the same time resistance.

The front part of the band is covered by the classic transparent window and very sensitive to the touch. We were able to check the operating system without any problem, almost as if the screen were free from any protection. From this point of view, the Mpow armband is at the top of those we have tried, even superior to some big brands that do not have an equally responsive material in terms of transparent cover. With our iPhone 7 it also manages to work with the Touch ID, allowing us to unlock it without necessarily having to remove it from the band, a not insignificant advantage when you want to interact with the apps in use (perhaps Runtastic) without having to interrupt your workouts.

Among other notable aspects, in addition to the classic mini pocket for the locker key in the gym, a double slot to slide the actual band. This allowed Mpow to reduce the length of the webbing, leaving the user the right to choose the gripping area, using the most suitable buttonhole (plastic coated to reduce wear and facilitate sliding). Excellent the area covered with the spongy strip for the velcro, which looks almost like normal fabric; even the square grip for the velcro appears to be made with a top quality material. The annoying crochet hooks seen in other low quality products are almost invisible; The grip is very accentuated and solid.

Finally, always talking about materials, the front band made of reflective material, useful for those who run in the dark and who need to be seen, should be noted. and several small openings on both sides that allow you to connect headphones jack (or Lightning in the case of iPhone 7 and later versions): in this way you will not be forced to use Bluetooth headphones.

How is it going

As far as comfort is concerned, we can say that there are few notes to be made. First of all, we specify that it is compatible with smartphones with a screen not exceeding 5.2 inches, so there are no problems if you use it with an iPhone 7/8 while it will be impossible to accompany it with one of the Plus series iPhones and probably (but this does not we can confirm this due to lack of evidence) it cannot be used with iPhone X either.

Apart from that, the band does its best to be easy to put on and easy to wear. Insert the tape in one of the two slots you prefer (using the one closest to the arm we can then pass the band through the second slot as well), then tighten and fasten with velcro.

As the season was not very favorable from a climatic point of view, we wore it over a long-sleeved shirt and we could not reliably measure the grip while running, but the material is very elastic and has an apparently firm grip. The phenomenon of fogging of the window is scarce, which in other products is instead very accentuated. The generous and solid flap that closes, almost seals, the back of the Mpow band certainly contributes to this resistance to the vapor generated by sweat.

In a test in the gym, where the band was fitted on the bare arm, we could appreciate the good breathability and a modest sponge effect; in practical terms, the right amount of sweat is retained, without letting anything pass inside; the iPhone was in fact completely dry. The only limitation we encountered is the lack of any indicator for the iPhone keys. To find volume and above all, since the volume can also be controlled with the remote control on the wire or the buttons on the Bluetooth headphones, the stop button, you have to grope as they are completely covered and placed in positions that are not easy to identify, if not pressing the edge of the pocket with some force.

Conclusions

Ultimately, the Mpow smartphone armband is a product of excellent quality, certainly superior in the relationship between price and performance to other similar accessories. It is comfortable to wear, made of good materials, perfectly adjustable and offers full control of the content thanks to a very sensitive touch screen.

Retail price

At € 8.99 on Amazon for the version, this is certainly a good deal for anyone who uses a 4.7-inch iPhone (or smaller version) while exercising.
