Musical.ly has been merged with TikTok, the corresponding app used in China

Thursday Musical.ly, the social network for making short videos in which to dance or lip-sync to famous songs, very popular with teenagers, has been merged with TikTok, a similar application created in 2016: both are owned by the company Chinese ByteDance, which bought Musical.ly last year for a billion dollars. By updating Musical.ly, subscribers will automatically switch to TikTok, where they will find their account with the settings they had chosen along with their videos. Among the novelties there will be an alarm that warns the user when he uses the app more than two hours a day.

ByteDance's intention is to strengthen users on both applications: Musical.ly is mainly used in the United States, where it has about 100 million subscribers, while TikTok is widespread in China, with 500 million active users per month. Unifying the two platforms will allow them to be strengthened in view of the competition from Facebook and will also eliminate any competition between the two apps, since users will not have to choose whether to subscribe to one or the other.
