When we talk about MyPassport for Mac, and MyPassport in general, we mean a product that in recent years has made the history of hard and portable drives, particularly in Italy where has ranged both in large distribution and small stores, as well as online.
Western Digital knows this and wanted to offer a product restyling that on the one hand could offer a characteristic design line (which a little 'has always been lacking in Western Digital, due to often not very courageous style choices) and on the other hand it persisted in proposing its own imprint of quality and solidity, strengthened by the fact of producing both the case and the actual disc.
Here at Macitynet, which we have seen many Western Digital discs (such as the MyBook Duo or MyCloud) we wanted to take a careful look at the new born too, in particular from the point of view of mobility. .
MyPassport for Mac, one dress elegant
The rejuvenation of MyPassport for Mac starts from the box, where the color stands out: the model we tested wore a black that, as one would be tempted to say, goes well with everything . Those with less formal needs can also find the same disk in Blue, Red, Orange, Yellow and in an unusual but interesting White, in the sizes from 1 to 4 TB in MyPassport edition (typically the same disk, only not formatted for Mac , an operation that can be solved in a few minutes with Disk Utility).
The Desktop version, on the other hand, offers only the black color, in the sizes of 3, 4, 6 and 8 TB.
The color is dominant in the product, so much so that even the cable inside follows the case proposing the same color (interesting aspect beyond the appearance, because almost all computer bags are black and often a colored cable is distinguishes first when we look for it).
The dimensions of the MyPassport for Mac are those of a parallelepiped of 110 x 81 mm, with 16.3 mm thickness for the 1 TB model (practically like a MacBook Pro of the last generation) which become 21.5 for the 2, 3 or 4 TB denominations.
The appearance that most impresses e is the external design composed of two distinct parts: the contrast is evident, in the first part the MyPassport for Mac sports a glossy plastic, with sharp but not sharp edges, where on one side the logo stands out and on the other the specifications and the feet
The second part is a diagonal shaped, also in opaque plastic, safer to grip as it is marked by very engraved horizontal lines, where the USB 3.0 connector stands out, the only way to communicate with the record.
The contrast is beautiful and cuts sharply with the past which, as we said, had led WD to make much more sober and anonymous choices, we would say conventional, with colors between the other even less lively (excluding some experiments such as the anniversary edition).
We like the result, it takes a while to get an eye on it but basically it is an original product that looks great close to the MacBook Pro as to the iMac: the only thing is that the shiny part, as is easy to guess ire, should be handled with clean hands: if you have eaten chips you will leave fingerprints for which the CSI technicians will not be needed to detect them. The opaque part, on the other hand, suffers less from this point of view.
More attentive users can opt for a disc case, which also protects it during travel: on Amazon there are several, from those Western Digital official ones to those proposed by Amazon.
New dress, same reliability
In everyday use the new dress of MyPassport for Mac plays a very marginal role: the disk arrives formatted in HFS + (therefore ready to be used by a Mac without having to prepare it first) and once connected it is ready to use, because the 2.5 “disk does not need additional power supply.
The disk offered performance suited to the needs and in line with the average of mechanical disks, so below from this point of view there are no technical improvements compared to the old generation, but only aesthetic ones.
The supplied software offers some more options than management via UtilityDisk, such as a more accurate diagnostics system, LED brightness control, and a way to encrypt the disk for added security, but for common use, you don't need to install much.
A faithful companion a form of storage with an excellent price / performance ratio that, in this new guise, (finally) offers an eye to originality, which may or may not be appreciated from a subjective point of view, but which does not affect the functioning and the reliability of the situation.
MyPassport for Mac is available both in large-scale distribution that in various shops of the peninsula, but our readers can find it, discounted, also on Amazon.it in. As mentioned, the pre-formatted MyPassport version for Windows (which can also be used safely on Mac, after initial formatting) is available in the colors White, Orange, Blue, Yellow and Red in different cuts, as well as the Desktop version, in different cuts but only in Black color
