There has been lying hidden, a nasty NTFS bug in Windows 10 that will corrupt your hard drive on the spot. Microsoft has been quite vigilant when it comes to bugs in its latest operating system. However, this bug has been in Windows 10 for almost 2 years now.
A single line of code causes the NTFS bug in Windows 10…
All it takes to corrupt an NTFS hard drive is a single line of command. The exploiter can deliver this command hidden in a shortcut file, ZIP file, or in HTML as well. Users have also reported that pasting this single line of command in their address bar, also results in corrupted drives.
Actually what this corrupts is the filesystem index. Surprisingly, it does not even require the victim to have administrative access.
An underestimated bug…
This is a critical underestimation from Microsoft’s side, to say the least. This bug has been excessively exploited by malicious actors since April 2018.
When a victim opens the file, URL, or the ZIP file containing the command, Windows will throw an error asking to restart the PC. The message informs you that you have to restart in order to repair drive errors. That is how the NTFS bug in Windows 10 corrupts the file system.
I really had to do this…
Now that the story is over, I will show you how I replicated this NTFS bug in Windows 10. Apparently, the short command that triggers the corruption will be something similar to C:\:$i30:$bitmap
.
Here I tried to create a Windows shortcut file. I set the target of the shortcut to the above line of code.
And then as soon as I clicked next, the below notification popped up.
Yikes! I did not even get the chance to finish creating the shortcut.
There has been no word from Microsoft on when they will release a fix for this NTFS bug in Windows 10. However, users can keep an eye on the ‘known issues’ section that Microsoft maintains for Windows 10 for the latest news.
