The new Kindle Oasis 2017 is a masterpiece of engineering for reading books. The most important thing we can ask is to have a separate device from network distractions when we want to focus or relax in the world of literature or non-fiction, but we are missing one important thing: protection.
Usually Amazon does not sell the covers together with its Kindles (in the package there is not even the charger but only the cable). With the only exception of the first generation of Kindle Oasis, equipped with a cover because it also acted as a battery, all the others have always had a cover designed by Amazon of good or excellent quality. Even the Kindle Oasis 2017 apparently was no exception, except that Amazon quickly “made the covers for this model disappear” from the store at the turn of the first Christmas. The reason? Nobody knows even though various kinds of explanations circulate, including severe production and functioning problems. A mistake, in short.
Not bad, because as the sea is full of fish, so the Internet is full of covers compatible with the Kindle, moreover that you can buy right on Amazon.it went to fish one, we bought and used it with satisfaction for a few days. Here's how it went.
The cover of IVSO
The packaging is the classic compact one of the products that can be purchased directly on Amazon, therefore very sober: nothing to report here. In particular, we were looking for a cover that was also black, to make the bulkiness more “streamlined”. A strong point of the Kindle Oasis 2017 is its minimal profile, and “weighing it down” with an excessive cover would be a shame. The black one, on the other hand, is optically even thinner than it is. And it is a really slim cover.
For 12.99 euros at the time of purchase we got this IVSO of the type Cover Case – Slim Smart Cover Protective Case in PU leather. The other features that interested us were two: the magnet to have the screen on-off, and the microfiber inside to avoid scratches. We were not looking for a cover that would magnetically seal because we did not think this could be a problem, even if there are those who criticize this idea: especially in a women's bag, where the objects are of a different type than those of a business bag, it is possible that the lid opens and then the Kindle is turned on again with the risk of scratches and battery consumption. This has never been the case for us, however, as we'll see in a moment.
How are you up strada
The cover of IVSO, a Chinese company based in Shenzen, is light and well made: the material that will have to cover our new Kindle Oasis 2017 e-reader seems to good quality in our one week test: it will take months to see if the duration will be up to that of the Amazon covers (which cost fifty and more euros but are indestructible) but so far there is really nothing to complain about . Even the edges, where the gracious cover in opaque plastic material overlaps with respect to the frame of the harder plastic body, is however well assembled and seems to have the right proportions.
The magnetic closure allows you to have Kindle activation and deactivation on demand, and this has a good result compared to the battery life in other types of protection without the magnet. As with the original packaging, when it arrives, you can count on the closure to have a better functionality of the Kindle. On the other hand, we did not encounter any problems inserting the cover with the Kindle in the backpack, bag or jacket pocket. It does not open, nor does it clip edges or scratch the surface. The materials are certainly not those of the Amazon covers but they defend themselves more than well.
The profile precisely follows the contours of the Kindle which therefore remains well protected inside the cover. If you open and hold it by the cover, there is no way of dropping the Kindle out (we tried, albeit with the reasonable caution of opening it over the bed at home, to avoid risks). You can see both the power button and the activation light and the micro-Usb socket for charging and connection. The cover maintains the profile with a “hump” that acts as a handle and this brings two advantages: on the one hand it maintains the silhouette of the Kindle, which is pleasant, and on the other it works well not only as a grip but also as a system to understand the fly, taking it out of the bag, which side we took it for.
Conclusions
Like all low cost third-party products, buying them is always an exercise in balance, especially if the cost of the appliance is so high. In this case, the Kindle Oasis 2017 is the most expensive of the entire family of Amazon's ebook readers, and therefore thinking of spending just over 12 euros for the cover seems almost a contradiction.
And it would be, if it were the usual low-quality “china”. On the other hand, our copy, which we regularly purchased on Amazon without any relationship with the Shenzen seller, is well made, apparently durable and resistant, and worth the expense because it is cheap but does not make our new Kindle Oasis 2017 look bad.
Pro – well made with the right proportions – materials pleasant to the touch – cheap Cons – it will take time to see it, but the materials are likely not to last as long as those of an original cover. At a sixth of the cost, however, it is not a big problem
