We broke up, just six months ago, with the excellent OnePlus 5T (of which you can read the review here), and after such a short time it was difficult to return to amaze. It is true, probably OnePlus 6T will arrive by the end of the year, but this is the philosophy of the company that you have to get used to: if you are now looking for a top smartphone you cannot fail to consider OnePlus 6. The why in our review .
Unboxing
The sales package is completely similar to that of OnePlus 5T, white, candid, with only logo 1+ embossed at the top and a shy number 6 that stands out on the central part, just to convey the idea of the model. Inside the package, in addition to the terminal, there is also the Dash Charge and a minimal cover, transparent but with a dark shade. Taking it in hand you feel you are in front of a high-end terminal, among the best ever in terms of construction and finishing. Same feeling we had with the previous model.
Display
The ninety price can be perceived immediately, the large screen. This is a 6.28-inch Optic AMOLED display, nestled inside a body that, surprisingly, is no bigger than the OnePlus 5T. The notch at the top is there, even if much smaller than that chosen by other top of the range. The display is a feast for the eyes, which is unmatched in quality. In this regard, all the impressions we had with the 5T are valid, which we fully reconfirm: the colors are bright, well calibrated, enveloping and do not change in the slightest when the angle is changed. The display is “vivid” and the colors are at the same time natural, with perfect blacks.
We were amazed by the white of the OnePlus 5T and the whites of OnePlus 6 continue to amaze us, really valuable. The display reads well in any light condition, enjoys numerous calibration options, which allow you to obtain the desired colors. Not to mention the two different night viewing and reading modes, which tend to strain the eyes as little as possible in the darkest hours and when using the terminal for reading. A touch of class present on the 5T, which we find in this OnePlus 6.
Probably the brightness level is not among the highest in the range of top-of-the-range smartphones, and the FullHD + resolution will not match QHD screens: it does not matter, OnePlus 6 has a screen that is unmatched and in everyday life there is no it will be a way of not appreciating the screen. It is true there is the notch, but …
The notch
At the release of iPhone X, the writer immediately sided with the detractors. A prominent black notch at the top of the screen sounded like a fall in style back then. Over time, probably, the public has made the eye, and on OnePlus 6 there is not bad at all. It is much smaller than that present on the Apple smartphone and, thanks to a simple software magic, it can be completely eliminated. Thanks to the AMOLED display, which transforms the bar at the top into a deep black, so much so that it seems off and the black mark disappears completely.
Like it or not, OnePlus 6 has something for everyone. With active notch you can enjoy a truly immense display, where the frames have been optimized to the best, even more than OnePlus 5T. This is especially noticeable on the lower part, where there is less space between the display and the lower frame. A terminal that from the point of view of dimensions is absolutely among the most optimized and proportionate. Too bad for the weight that grows slightly compared to the predecessor: 177 grams against the 62 of the predecessor.
Aesthetics
If it were not for the front notch, for a different arrangement of the side buttons and for the arrangement of the rear room, the 5T and OnePlus 6 could compare from an aesthetic point of view. It can still be done, but with the differences just mentioned. Is it bad that you look like your predecessor? Absolutely not, the smartphone is among the most beautiful currently on the market, actually very similar to other high-end terminals, which are adopting the notch on the front.
Pay attention, however, to the details. It houses, for example, really small, almost invisible antenna lines, while the mute button has been moved from the left (OnePlus 5T) to the right side. For those who are not left-handed this is a not insignificant novelty, considering that now it can be reached even better. The volume rocker has been moved to the left instead, and even the Power button is now mirrored compared to OnePlus 5T, being on the right, just below the mute button.
In short, the phone may seem familiar in aesthetics, especially to those who have had a OnePlus in their hands 5T, but it is second to none in construction and materials, especially considering the price.
It is on the back that there are other changes: not only has the dual camera been moved to the vertical position and central, but also the fingerprint sensor has been redesigned: aesthetically it looks even more modern than the one placed on the OnePlus 5T, even if the latter was probably more comfortable due to a larger round shape. In any case, the OnePlus 6 Touch ID sensor is absolutely lightning-fast and precise, but even better is the fact that you can do without it, thanks to an even faster and more precise Face ID.
OnePlus 6 still features the 3.5mm headphone jack on the lower frame, while at the side there is the only speaker present. Of course, the USB-C connector also finds space on the bottom. Coming to the shortcomings, OnePlus 6 has decided not to implement wireless charging (probably there will be on OnePlus 6T?), While the USB-C connector does not support the Power Delivery standard. On this, however, it must be said that the proprietary Dash charging is among the fastest and most appreciable ever.
Technical specifications
Discounted to say, but better to reiterate: OnePlus 6, especially in the version with 8 GB of RAM we tested, is among the fastest terminals on the market, second to none. Alongside the 6.28-inch OLED screen there are top features, such as the Snapdragon 845 processor, 6/8 GB of RAM, 64/128 or 256GB storage, with Dual SIM support. The battery inside the OnePlus 6 does slightly worse than the OnePlus 5T, but it is still a valid ally to overcome the stress of the whole day without worries.
Among the certified features there is no water resistance. OnePlus specifies that the terminal is still protected against liquids, and that the lack of certification is only a matter of form (probably related to costs). In any case, in the event of liquid damage, it will not be possible to activate the warranty. We do not feel like criticizing the lack of formal certification; let's not forget, in fact, that although other houses certify the smartphone as IP68, they do not offer any guarantee against liquid damage.
Camera and multimedia
OnePlus 6 is an evident step forward also from a multimedia point of view. Although the main sensor remains at 16 MP, the size of the single pixel increases, now equal to 1.22 microns, combined with the presence of optical image stabilization (OIS) and a focal width lens 1.7, all features that help the terminal to compete also in the field of night photos.
Photo
The secondary sensor is 20MP, the same used on OnePlus 5T, which has the sole purpose of managing depth information in Portrait mode. Too bad, it could be a great support for low-light photos tricks or it could be used for telephoto functions.
Anyway, the OnePlus 6 takes pictures of absolute quality in broad daylight and in perfect light conditions, just as it does a good job with Portrait mode, and in videos thanks to the presence of optical stabilization.
At the hardware level, the sensor used by OnePlus is the Sony IMX519, capable of capturing more light than any previous OnePlus, while the final quality of each shot is properly assisted by the image processor of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, able to eliminate some imperfections and also improve the shots at night. In any case, in low light conditions, the OnePlus 6 still feels a bit behind compared to other flagships, such as Huawei's Galaxy S9 + and P20 Pro, which cost almost double the list.
OnePlus photographic software is the same, basically, appreciated on OnePlus 5T, except for the addition of some effects in Portrait mode. This is an absolutely simple app to use, with few shooting or recording modes, even if the really interesting ones are all there. For example, the slow motion, improved compared to the past, now able to reach 480FPS at 720P, and 240FPS at 1080P.
On the front there is the same 16MP sensor present on the last two generations of OnePlus. , but at the software level the possibility of taking Portraits also with the selfie camera has been added.
Video
As for videos, OnePlus 6 offers recordings up to 4K at 60 FPS (for up to 5 minutes) . Using the shooting mode 4K at 30 fps, or 1080p at 30 or 60 frames per second instead, you gain electronic and optical stabilization, and it is an added value.
Slow motion, as already mentioned offers 480fps at 720p and 240fps at 1080p, a joy to use, even if the footage is limited to one minute of real recording, which still translates into over 10 minutes of slo-mo video at 480 fps, therefore absolutely appreciable.
Software
The positive comment we had already given to the 5T model must absolutely be replicated on the software, with new features that improve it even more. user experience. OnePlus seems to have understood that software is an important pawn to support hardware. The Oxygen UI is among the Android interfaces to be preferred. On the one hand it returns the stock experience, which doesn't hurt, but on the other hand it adds very small customizations that make the terminal absolutely efficient. For example, you can insert widgets, quick contacts and other features into a sort of assistant to be invoked with a swipe from left to right. The system launcher allows, without being in any way heavy, to change layout, modify icons, and access quick functions for each app as on the Pixel.
As many as there are already mentioned, the possibilities to customize the colors re of the display, the preferred theme (light, dark), to modify the icons of the status bar, such as the battery, to insert customized gestures. In short, an Android stock in which small gems are grafted, which usually an Android user is forced to search for in alternative launchers. Small, big flaw is still the absence of a one-handed mode of use. If Xiaomi and Huawei have made it a real philosophy, one slide being enough to reduce the entire UI, so that you can use it with one hand, OnePlus seems to have forgotten about it.
Among the other goodies of the software the ambient display, which wakes up the screen when each notification is received, showing a preview of the messages. Again, by lifting the display from the desk you can read the time and check for notifications via white icons set against a black background (in the latter case the phone will not be unlocked by the face).
The news
Tra the novelties of particular interest the one entitled Game Mode. During a videogame session it is possible to choose whether to answer hands-free calls, block notifications, disable battery saver or automatic brightness, also optimizing the network, limiting the bandwidth for any apps in use in the background, so as to give the maximum in multiplayer game sessions.
iPhone X style gestures
Another novelty, actually already present for some time on OnePlus 5T (first only in beta version, then also stable) is the presence of iPhone style gestures X. Also in this case it is a real gem, which allows you to use the entire display without annoying virtual buttons on the nav bar at the bottom. Upward slides allow you to return to the home, towards the center allow you to activate multitasking, while upward slides from the right and left side act as back buttons. After getting used to it, it will be difficult to use a telephone with classic virtual buttons.
OnePlus 5T vs OnePlus 6 photo comparison
Here is a photographic comparison between OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 6, with particular attention to the differences: front notch on the 6, and lower frame reduced especially on the lower edge. On the rear camera and different touch ID.
Conclusions
Unlike what happens with all the other reviews we want to conclude in two different ways. A first conclusion, on a general level, is that OnePlus 6 is among the best smartphones currently available on the market, especially by virtue of the list price, 519 euros in the 6 / 64GB version, and 569 in the 8/128 GB variant. It is a top performing phone, which does well in any department, which excels in speed and reliability in everyday use. Improved the multimedia department, keeping all the PROs of OnePlus 5T.
It is worth upgrading from 5T to OnePlus 6 ?
The second conclusion concerns the possible upgrade from OnePlus 5T to OnePlus 6. Is it worth it? If you are a lover of the latest version, the reasons for the update are certainly not lacking: larger display with the same overall dimensions of the terminal, improved camera body.
Beyond this evaluation, however, one could still settle for the OnePlus 5T. Attention, not because OnePlus 6 is not valid (far from it is among the best smartphones on the market), but only for the merits of the previous model, still absolutely current and able to compete on the top scene.
Prices and availability
OnePlus 6 is the terminal with the best value for money. It starts from 519 euros for the model with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of integrated memory, to go up to 569 euros for the 8/128 GB model. Then there is a variant from 619 euros with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. While the latter exists only in the Midnight Black variant, the others are also sibilinibili in the Mirror Black color, therefore mirror. In addition, the Silk White has recently been available on the market, with white back, in the variant of 8GB of RAM and 128 of integrated storage.
On Amazon you can buy from this address , although currently, often and willingly, it is in short supply in the catalog.
