Nowadays it is hard to find a smartphone that is really different from all the others. Yet interesting solutions are coming from China, which distance themselves from the notch chosen by Apple and many other Android manufacturers, but which do not give up on full-screen terminals, with practically non-existent frames. Oppo Find X is the most extreme solution available on the market today; a smartphone with a soul inside.
Unboxing
Unboxing of this terminal deserves attention, because it offers quite interesting accessories. Beyond the terminal, which we will talk about shortly, the sales package includes a pair of headphones, very similar to Apple's earpods, with a USB-C cable. From this choice it is immediately understood that Oppo Find X renounces the 3.5 mm audio jack, probably to safeguard an even more minimal and futuristic appearance. Furthermore, inside the package there is also a transparent rigid cover, of exquisite workmanship and, above all, completely open on the top, so as to leave space for the opening of the retractable trolley that contains the three cameras. The terminal comes with a pre-installed film: excellent, considering that it would be difficult to apply it perfectly due to the curved display on both sides.
Aesthetics
There is no finer terminal than Oppo Find X on the market. If it is true that beauty is subjective, Oppo Find X is the object of desire of many addicted. It does not go without negative sides, such as size: those who do not like phablets will find it quite bulky. In fact, it offers a 6.4-inch screen, with dimensions contained in 156.7 x 74.2 x 9.6 mm, with a weight of 186 grams. Just to make some comparisons it is shorter than a Galaxy S9 Plus, slightly thicker and wider, but less heavy. It is true, it has generous dimensions, but it holds particularly well in the hand. The display is really huge, 6.4 inches, and covers almost 94% of the entire front.
With such narrow frames, really almost non-existent, it is impossible to think of a space for a physical key or for the positioning of the front camera, which seems absent at first sight. Same thing on the rear, which does not have any physical buttons, nor many photographic sensors. Oppo Find X is the terminal with the cleanest lines on the market, a real eye-catcher at sight.
This is also thanks to the particular colors available on the market, Blue or Magenta. Both offer a visible color on the sides of the rear body, while on the central part they tend to black anyway.

Technical characteristics
The technical data sheet that we report immediately below describes a top of the range terminal from all points of view. It is a splinter in everyday use, although at the moment we have tested it with Chinese software, which could hide some lack of optimization. For example, of the 8 GB of RAM we have noticed that on average only 3 are available. After a few minutes of use, opening numerous apps, the free RAM drops to 3, and it struggles to recover even when the apps are closed in multitasking. It could also be visual bugs, also because the terminal always remains fluid, without any uncertainty.

It is quick to open apps and switch between them. Thanks to the Snapdragon 845 Oppo Find X does not fear comparisons and with the latest firmware updates the recorded AnTuTu score is higher than 288 thousand points.
Display
The 6.4-inch Amoled drive is truly impressive. Bright, legible under any light condition, full of colors, with very deep blacks. The panel stands out for its dimensions and for the absolutely reduced frames, but unfortunately it pays in terms of resolution. Unlike Samsung, LG and HTC which boast on a QHD resolution, Find X offers a Full HD Plus, with a pixel density of 401 ppi. It is of course an excellent panel, but above all in video playback and during games you can perceive the difference with other top of the range.
Find X does not have a real notification LED, but offers a Panoramic Lights function: upon receiving notifications and calls , the perimeter of the screen begins to light up with different colors. Too bad that there are only two turns of light, after which the display will turn off completely.
Retractable cameras
As anticipated in the title of this review, Oppo Find X has a soul inside. It is the camera department, hidden inside the body. It comes out from the top every time the Camera is called up, or when the terminal is unlocked. Yes, because Oppo Find X does not have Touch ID, but it relies on a three-dimensional Face ID, like that of Apple, to unlock the terminal. The manufacturer assures about 100,000 camera apertures: the mechanism could cause concern: during our tests, after numerous stresses, and almost three weeks of use, we did not encounter any problems.
The retractable trolley includes all three cameras of the device: then the two rear sensors, and also the selfie camera. On the back, Oppo Find X offers a 16 MP configuration with f / 2.0, 1 / 2.6 ″, 1.22µm aperture, flanked by a 20 MP, f / 2.0, 1 / 2.8 ″, 1.0µm sensor, capable of recording video, , There is a lot of meat on the fire even for selfie lovers, thanks to a 25 MP camera, with an aperture of f / 2.0.
How to take pictures
The camera sector, it can also be perceived from the technical data mentioned above, is very respectable. We leave the reader to judge by proposing a gallery of shots taken with the terminal, without any changes in post production. On a general level we notice some good shots, with bright colors and numerous details captured. It seems to us that Oppo Find X is still a step below the main top of the competitor range, including iPhone X, but in any case the result obtained is very respectable.

The camera is equipped with artificial intelligence, and allows to identify up to 21 different scenes, so as to automatically adjust settings to achieve the best possible shot.
The 25 MP front camera, which Oppo calls Stealth 3D, and which includes 3D modeling possibilities to offer a better beautification mode as well as allowing facial unlocking in any light condition.

Face ID
As already anticipated, Oppo Find X leverages only the face unlock, and does not propose other solutions, such as Touch ID. From this point of view, Oppo Find X is always ready and functional: the terminal is unlocked in half a second and in any light condition. During our tests the Face ID has always worked: in the dark, with the sun behind you, with eyeglasses and sunglasses, wineskin or with flashy hats. Yes, face unlock works at least as good as the iPhone X, and to be honest, even better.
Audio Department
Oppo Find X unfortunately offers mono audio. It still has a very loud volume and feels good. Fortunately, even with absolutely reduced frames it offers an ear capsule for standard telephone conversations. It is not necessary to open the camera compartment in order to use the ear capsule.

Software
And here come the painful notes, at least for the moment. The terminal we tested is the Chinese version. It offers Android 8.1 customized with ColorOS, which takes some features from iOS that will not appeal to Android fans in any way. Among all, the aspect of notifications. These are not displayed with the classic icon in the status bar at the top, just like on iOS. To notice a notification you will have to scroll down the notification curtain, or you will have to rely on the small dot that appears next to the icons of the various apps.
We reserve the right to return to talk about Oppo Find X if, and when, we will be able to test it in the International version, not yet available on the market. The smartphone in the Chinese version, to be used, requires a lot of user interventions, and offers limitations that cannot be circumvented at the moment: forget, for example, the third-party launchers, unless you delete the standard Oppo one from the ADB, giving up the complete gesture functionality.
Among all, the possibility of setting the Auto-Start only for a maximum of 5 applications. This is a necessary setting to receive push notifications, and limiting this possibility to just 5 apps compromises the daily use of the terminal. Furthermore, while the notifications of WhatsApp seem to work correctly (after having activated them manually), those of Telegram are somewhat random.
To enable Telegram notifications we have resorted to third-party applications on the store, having to activate notifications manually from the app info. Furthermore, these settings, from time to time, are reset, and you will have to activate notifications again to receive them in push. In short, the Chinese software is absolutely not optimized for our market: at the moment Oppo Find X is a terminal suitable only for experts, who can improve system performance even through ADB commands.
Chinese and international firmware
At the moment on GearBest (online store that offers the lowest price for the terminal), only the Chinese version, but the international one will arrive soon. In our country Oppo Find X will be officially marketed at a price of 999 euros, while the Chinese version costs just 740 euros on GearBest.
There is no doubt that the advice is to wait for the international version of the software, therefore optimized for our country or, at least, wait for the release of the official international firmware, to check if it can be installed on the Chinese version. At that point, it might be advisable to buy the Chinese version, thus saving around 250 euros, and then install the international Fw on it.
In any case, even with the Chinese version it will be possible to access all Google services. It will be sufficient to install the Google Play Store from the Oppo App Store to have the Big G services up and running, including those for synchronizing photos, contacts and various accounts.
Gestures
Oppo Find X offers different configurations for controlling the UI. Not only is it possible to use the classic virtual screen button panel, but also the iPhone X style gestures. Indeed, this Oppo offers many more, being able to choose the configuration that best suits your needs. The gestures work beautifully, always responsive.
We only noticed a “worse” operation in the event that the advanced gestures at the edges of the screen, thanks to which you can quickly switch between the last two apps used, or quickly activate the multi screen. When these two gestures are active, the ones below to go back to the Home or to go back work slightly worse and are not always recognized.
Autonomy and battery
The version we tested includes a 3.730 mAh battery, naturally non-removable, equipped with Oppo's VOOC fast charging. Both autonomy and charging speed were promoted with flying colors. The terminal takes us quietly in the evening with a massive use, while it also reaches a day and a half with medium bland use. The charging speed is impressive, the first that has amazed us like that OnePlus Dash. Too bad there is an option for wireless charging, not supported by the terminal.
Conclusions
We will return to talk about the terminal, to give a definitive judgment, when the international firmware version will be available. Currently Oppo Find X is among the most beautiful and futuristic smartphones on the market. It is a splendor, little to say, but the Chinese firmware makes it suitable, at the moment, only for an audience of experts. Even the price could scare users, given that in Italy it will cost 999 euros. The hope is that it is possible to flash the international ROM on the smartphone in the Chinese version, so as to be able to buy it at a much lower price.
