Optical fiber, 46 countries do better than Italy

Out of 81 countries, Italy ranked 47th in the special ranking on optical fiber (coverage and use). Our country, in particular, was included in the so-called cluster 2 “Movers and Shakers” with an overall score of 23 points, on a par with Mexico. Leading the ranking, however, is Singapore with 92 points, followed by South Korea (76 points) and the United Arab Emirates (72 points).

In short, Italy will have to invest more in the diffusion of optical fiber, also because, as highlighted by the Omdia study in the Global Fiber Development Index , by 2026 the percentage of the world population connected to the Internet will increase up to 70% (the figure, today, stands at 58%).

Furthermore, according to this study, 30% of this percentage will connect through a mobile device while the remaining 40% will rely on a fixed domestic broadband connection.

Finally, the research director Michael Philpott underlined the advantages of a greater use of optical fiber: « In addition to the economic advantages, an all-fiber network offers significant environmental advantages over both xDsl and hybrid coaxial fiber (HFC) networks. In 2019, Telefónica (Spain) said its FTTH network was 85% more energy efficient than its old copper infrastructure. The operator said that with the FTTH it saved 208 GWh in three years, equal to a reduction of 56,500 tons of CO2 emissions. “
