Orange closes Amena, its 'low cost' operator

Orange confirms the definitive closure of Amena , its low cost operator. Amena, at the time, was an independent operator, but the France Telecom group acquired it to bring its Orange brand to Spain. Finally, in 2012, the company relaunched Amena as a new MVNO, adding rates at low prices to compete against the rest of the low-cost operators.

Now, the telecommunications company has confirmed to some of its clients that Amena will merge with Orange . The low cost brand, therefore, will disappear from the group and all customers will be transferred to the large operator as of September 13 . Users with an Amena rate will keep the SIM and their current plans, which will have the same options, but under a new commercial name.

Orange will also add 5G coverage to all rates. They will lose, yes, the possibility of accumulating gigs. However, the operator will offer all users an extra data bonus with 4 GB.

Existing customers who unsubscribe will not be able to contract an Amena rate again. If an Amena customer wishes to purchase an additional line in their rate after the closure of the brand, they can do so through Orange, which will offer a 20% discount on all its plans.

A few weeks before the change takes effect, customers will receive an email and an SMS with a notice about the merger, while the operator will set up a website with all the details of the new rates and additional information to resolve doubts.

France Telecom will keep the rest of the brands in its group. Simyo will be in charge of competing against low cost operators, such as Lowi or Tuenti Móvil. Jazztel , meanwhile, will be the brand that will allow the telecommunications company to fight against O2, Virgin Teleco or MassMóvil. In the Premium segment: Orange, which competes against Movistar, Yoigo and Vodafone.
