TR-002 is an expansion unit via USB-C suitable for providing additional space for both NAS (QNAP, but also others) as well as serving Macs and PCs via USB.
This device can be a really interesting solution for those who already have a NAS and want to expand its capacity without having to change discs, but also an ideal solution for the professional who needs an external drive for Mac and PC, via USB or USB- C, to which to entrust the fundamental role of its archive.

As you expect
Out of the box, the TR-002 is presented in a very simple way: in addition to the disk there is an external power supply, a USB-C / USB-A cable and a bag with screws for attaching 2.5 SSDs ″ And the security keys.
We quickly noticed the lack of a USB-C / USB-C cable, which would have been very convenient for someone like us who has used the drive with a new Mac (but such cables are very easily found)
Aesthetically it is a black parallelepiped, in porous plastic except for the belt where the LEDs are shiny and the visible rear part in metal.

At the front there are the two visible slides and a series of LEDs that indicate the activity.
At the rear there is the USB-C connector, the one for the power supply, the physical button for the ignition and the mechanical system to define the raid set.
Since the TR-002 does not have an operating system, it was necessary to offer a system to change the hardware RAID level, which is very convenient here because it is well indicated, however the opinion of the writer is that the system is too visible, and that accidental use of the button can cause more than a few problems in crowded places.

Elastic and versatile
It goes without saying that, despite the only two slides available, the TR-002 lends itself to considerable forms of use: the management of the two disks can take place for single volumes, JBOD, Raid 0 and 1 with hardware and software controllers.
From the point of view of use, however, the QNAP TR-002 can be used to expand the capacity of a NAS, as an external drive of a NAS (different situation, for example for a backup), as an external drive of a computer (Mac or PC) , selected the preferred filesystem and finally as a mobile storage unit (or similar) for large data exchanges between Mac and PC (using the ExFAT filesystem).
This last case, a bit extreme, allows you to operate with volumes up to 32 GB (two 16 GB disks in RAID 0 or JBOD) for exchanging documents in the absence of a network.

Excellent mechanics
A little for the QNAP name, a little for the position it takes in the market, we expected the TR-002 to be a professional cut unit and we were not disappointed.
The aesthetics are austere (but suitable for use) and the mechanics appear excellent: silent, precise, fast and without frills the TR-002 is a device cut for the professional.
In our case we tested it with two 6 TB WD RED drives in RAID 0, to verify the maximum speed, which was very good, with values of 169 MB / sec in writing and 300 MB / sec in reading, data also from the goodness of Western Digital RED discs.

Considerations
The considerations on this record can only be good: the unit offers an austere look, certainly not a living room, the mechanics appear excellent and the performance as expected from a QNAP product, which has always been well above average.
Some small venal defects such as the lack of a pure USB-C cable and a RAID button perhaps too visible do not affect the general quality which is undoubtedly first-rate, at a higher price than normal, but suitable for a range of users which considers reliability and quality before cost.
