Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed Review, Dr. Jekyll and Mister Hyde of mice

The Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed is the latest addition to the new generation of Razer mice presented this fall: but although the exterior shapes are very similar to the older brother Basilisk Ultimate, inside this mouse it is profoundly different.

So different (and it could not be otherwise, given the contemporaneity in the market) both in performance and in price, with some important specificities that we are going to see, to reflect on the same flush models and on the validity of the necessary compromises.

    Two mice in one

Inside the box, small and essential, we find only the mouse and the AA battery for the power supply: there are no cables even if the classic booklet and the motivating sheet typical of Razer that introduces the user to a world are not missing. very particular, made up of details, quality and (usually) zero compromises, although this model is probably a bit of an exception.

Aesthetically, the Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed is identical, millimeter by millimeter to the Razer Basilisk Ultimate, except for the Chroma lighting, here totally absent, for the base under the mouse, here much more anonymous and for the weight, 83 grams, so just slightly higher. to the Viper Ultimate model.

Inside, the differences increase: the Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed for example does not have a wire connection system, it only works on battery, which is housed inside the back that opens with a short press on the back and shows precisely the bed for the battery and the drawer for the USB-A antenna.

The connection system is double and exclusively wireless: the mouse works via Bluetooth or via Wi-Fi at 2.4 Ghz, via a switch below that also allows you to turn off the mouse.

The double connection is not just a matter of practicality, because according to the type of use the Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed shows very different performances, so much so that we think that they are two products merged into a single form, selectable according to the job. and the convenience of the moment.

    The road in blue

When Bluetooth mode is selected, the mouse offers limited performance: it is still a product with a true 16,000 dpi 5G sensor, with 40G acceleration, six programmable buttons via Synapse 3.0 drivers (for Windows only) with memory mode for one keymap integrated directly into the mouse.

Unfortunately, the usual feeling of softness and naturalness is missing in this mode.

With the drivers or without the mouse it works perfectly, but the movement is slightly insecure and basically the dpi does not work as it should, with a signal accuracy not suitable for a mouse of this fame (neither of this price, one of the least expensive in the list. Razer but still an important general in the mouse world).

Of course, there is the convenience of saving a precious USB-A port, which especially in laptops can make the difference, but in the face of the test of different products, in Bluetooth the Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed is not up to par with many of its brothers. .

The positive part is that thanks to the low consumption Bluetooth chip, the life of a battery is estimated at 450 hours of use, which on balance is three working months if used all day, four with use on low intensity environments. a durability in line with the office competition, which in any case cannot boast such a powerful optical chip.

    The true face

But the real turning point we had by selecting the 2.4 Ghz wireless mode, via the USB-A antenna: at this point the mouse is transformed and the meek and humble Dr. Jekyll becomes Mister Hyde (as in the splendid “The Nutty Professor “By Jerry Lewis).

The Wi-Fi channel is in fact large enough to be able to activate the HyperSpeed mode, bringing the mouse back to the standards to which Razer has accustomed us and offering softness, precision and the sense of security that the optical chip is able to offer.

In this mode the mouse offers the best of itself, rivaling its brothers in terms of sensitivity and sensation, which has always been the thing that strikes us most about snake mice.

The optical sensor, among other things, works very well on a professional mat: we tested it on the Gigantus, but the situation does not change on other similar mats, such as the Razer Firefly 2: the mouse has some characteristics that well differentiate it from the latest models such as mechanical (and non-optical) switches, the lack of underlying non-stick feet, the variable hardness wheel and, as anticipated, the total lack of the Chroma effect, a consequence of the need to save any ounce of power.

Contrary to the Bluetooth mode, here the real Achilles heel is the duration, estimated at 285 hours, almost half of before: a little bit if you use it in the office, considering the need to always have a stylus battery available (because the mouse does not work with internal rechargeable batteries).

    Considerations

Exposing yourself with a single consideration for a product that works so differently based on the type of connection used is dangerous, because every judgment we make risks not being faithful from different points of view.

If you intend it as an occasional product, to keep in the backpack for sporadic games or to use it with the laptop without expecting the performance to which Razer has accustomed us then the Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed becomes a pleasure, because the right-handed handle is (a lot) good, not fatiguing and the mouse under Windows can be manipulated very well in programming thanks to Synapse (under Mac much less, but it works both ways).

If, on the other hand, you want an interesting and valid product, which is wireless but also powerful to which you can entrust the fate of peace in the world in a game of Overwatch or Starcraft, also in this case the Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed satisfies you, using it in Wi-Fi, as long as you know that you are giving up the Chroma effect that the writer has always liked so much.

The point is that in both cases it is a question of trade-offs, quality of response on the one hand (Bluetooth) and battery life on the other (Wi-Fi), which have a weight to which the user must give due importance, in the face of very fierce competition.

After so many mouse reviews, this is the first Razer to feature such obvious trade-offs and it makes us wonder if really having a cordless mouse like this is worth the candle, taking this price and considering the same Basilisk flush, which costs less and delivers. Moreover.

At this point, the Basilisk Ultimate solution becomes more interesting, which does not have the limits found here, even if at a price that is more than double (but with features in line with the market range).

    Pro:

    • Convenient, powerful, independent • Via Wi-Fi it is equal to the wired models

    Cons:

    • Via Bluetooth the performances are not up to par • Charging is only with external battery

    Price

    • 69.99 Euro

The Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed model can be purchased in the official Italian Razer store at a price of 69.99 euros, although it is also available at Amazon.it at the same price.

For those interested at the time of writing, the flush model is still available in the colors Black, White and Pink, as well as the Essential model, with a more affordable price. Those who want higher performance recommend the examination of the Razer Basilisk Ultimate model, whose price and performance are in a higher range of the market.
