In its larger version, the Razer Gigantus V2 looks like a small blanket, or a gym mat instead it is “just” a mouse pad.
A mat that covers the entire desk, or almost, in a professional way, with the head of professional players but which basically is good for all those who spend many hours in front of the desk.
Razer Gigantus V2, the review
No diminutives, please
It was once called a “mouse pad”, because it was a miniature carpet, but over time it first specialized in the gaming sector (where it offers higher performance to a high demand audience) and then enlarged to offer more freedom of movement and more comfort in general.
Now, let's face it, calling it a mat is no longer the case, because the smaller version measures 360 x 275 mm, but the larger one, tested, counts 1,200 x 550 mm, basically an average desk.

But the concept of carpet, or precision surface as it would be called given the result, is a really important accessory, which until you try it you can ignore it, but afterwards it becomes indispensable.
The writer has been using it since the review of the Razer DeathAdder Elite in its first incarnation, with considerable satisfaction, and could not be without it, for the reasons we now see.
Three layers
The Razer Gigantus V2 offers a thickness divided into three layers: the upper one, in black Microtrama, is optimized for the optical sensors of the mice, but also achieves other results.
Basically, let the skin that rests on it (typically the arms that reach the keyboard) don't sweat in the summer and don't suffer the cold in the winter (when you arrive early in the morning).

But it is with mice that you get the best results: modern mice with an optical sensor greatly improve performance on such a mat, because the sensor understands movement much better thanks to the dense texture, which optimizes scanning during movement. .
With this pad, the mice seem to literally fly, effortlessly, while increasing accuracy.
The sponge in the middle, 3 mm (M and L) and 4 mm (XXL and 3XL), rubbery with high density, offers a soft surface, very pleasant to the touch.
The smaller pad accommodates only the mouse, the larger one accommodates everything from the keyboard to the HUB, from the computer at the base of the display to the can of coke and the table lamp. The surface is always homogeneous and free of imperfections, excellent for example for tables in raw wood.
Finally, the last surface is a layer of viscous rubber that adheres to the table and holds the pad in place: no matter what happens, the pad (or mat) always stays in place, letting the mouse move freely.
The lower layer, in rubber, improves adherence to the table
Considerations
Many of the modern mice, practically all gamer mice, today have motion sensors that involve the use of a professional mat such as the Razer Gigantus V2 which serves precisely to optimize the response of this class of chip (as specified in our piece on the difference between optical and laser mice).
The difference with or without carpet is, without beating about the bush, abysmal for any type of mouse, of any brand: clearly Razer plays at home here, because for example in the Synapse drivers it is possible to manually indicate the type of surface and even in the latest models like the Viper Ultimate and Basilisk Ultimate the mapping is completely automatic.
These two models, among other things, also have ceramic feet which is optimized for this type of mat.
But generally the Razer Gigantus V2 offers ample satisfaction for any type of mouse: in particular, the larger version we tested covers almost the entire desk (all in medium desks) offering a wide freedom of use with any type of device. , a very important situation for those who spend many hours in front of the screen.
The price is not popular, but we are talking about Razer, the excellence of the sector and a mat that has two sizes out of four (XXL and 3XL) practically unique in the market.
At the moment in Italy it is possible to buy it with only one graphic, but we hope that soon Razer will release the same level of American customization, where a wide diversification with the brands of the most famous eSports teams is possible.
