The smartphone stage is always rapidly changing, and after the fashion of 18: 9, or 19: 9 displays, manufacturers are trying to explore new avenues. Leading the way is Razer, which with Razer Phone paves the way for gaming smartphones, terminals focused and optimized for mobile gaming. The idea is not bad, given that games represent the applications most downloaded and appreciated by users. Here's our proof, is it really worth buying?
Aesthetics
The idea of a Razer Phone, probably, was born in 2016, but concretely advanced in January 2017, when the company bought Nextbit, the team behind Robin, the cloud phone that despite its originality, was not totally appreciated. On an aesthetic level, the similarities from Razer Phone and Robin are evident: square shapes and two large bands on the top and bottom of the terminal, which this time hide the stereo speakers, for a front sound, which helps the sound department of mobile gaming, but also the multimedia side.
Razer Phone is not a phone that you can easily put in your pocket, due to the its generous dimensions, and not too low weight. It measures 158.5 x 77.7 x 8 mm and weighs 197 grams. Not a featherweight, then. In any case, taking it for the first time in hand there is a strange sensation: you have the idea of holding a real mobile console in your hands, rather than a smartphone.
Considering the focus of the terminal this is good news. Square and cutting edges, an aggressive look as per Razer tradition, and the company logo clearly visible on the back, just below the double main camera. The terminal cleanses a 5.7-inch display, while speaker grilles surround it on the top and bottom, with all buttons placed on the sides of the device. Not only those related to the volume rocker, but also the physical Home button that incorporates the fingerprint sensor.
Speaking of this side Touch ID, it performs well, offers responsiveness and precision, even if initially you will have to do the hand. The writer has always appreciated this type of lateral solution, even if using it in everyday life has not proved to be as convenient as the classic front or rear button.
The lower frame houses only a USB connector- C, while there is no 3.5 mm headphone jack input. Fortunately, the sales package includes the USB-C to headphone jack adapter, which includes an integrated and combined DAC / AMP system.
Its minimalist design fits particularly well with the line up of other Razer products, although sadly the 5.7-inch display has a black bezel too conspicuous and evident, which increases the overall dimensions of the device. From the point of view of size optimizations it could have been done better. The screen has an aspect ratio of 16: 9, which makes one-handed operation particularly difficult. It's not bad when using the Razer Phone as a landscape console, but for portrait mode games, even those that could be used with one hand, it becomes a daunting task.
Display
The most publicized feature of the Razer Phone, needless to go around it, was the display. This is due to the 120 Hz refresh rate for the IPS panel, which has a Quad HD resolution. No doubt about it, right from the main UI, but even while browsing web pages and scrolling the page, you realize this particularly high refresh rate. In games, this strength is perceived without problems only in products that are truly optimized for this display, such as Titanfall: Assalut, while it is more difficult to perceive the difference in games that are not optimized for this display at all.
This is probably also due to a battery optimization system, which does not use a higher refresh rate when not needed. While using games that require more computing power, unfortunately, we also saw a heating on the top of the terminal. We cannot ignore that this is a cons, considering that the Razer Phone is a smartphone for gaming, and that it will also be used with particularly demanding 3D games. It will not be uncommon, then, to find a slightly warm smartphone in your hands after a few minutes of play.
That said, the display also has a few other weaknesses. The IPS technology is a bit weak in bright light conditions, and even the maximum brightness fails to compensate. Obviously these are details, which we underline in consideration of the high quality of the terminal, which is still a real top of the range from all points of view. Overall, the panel of the Razer Phone features is absolutely sharp and offers extremely pleasant viewing.
Performance
Performance-wise , Razer Phone is able to satisfy any type of audience. It mounts a Snapdragon 835 processor with 8 GB of RAM in support, with 64 GB of integrated memory and the possibility of expansion via microSD. These are specifications that make the phone run extremely smoothly, with a pleasant everyday experience and at the top of the possibilities of the current landscape.
The gaming side, however, is not only made up of the video department, but the sound also plays its part. From this point of view, the Razer Phone is an excellent ally. The front speakers face directly towards the player, providing an immersive and well-balanced experience. Unfortunately there is no headphone jack, but the inclusion of a DAC and AMP adapter mitigates the problem.
In terms of autonomy, the device rests on a 4000 mAh battery. It does not work miracles, especially in consideration of the fact that those who buy them will want to use it more to play with them. To improve autonomy, which in everyday life is standard and in line with all other terminals, it is possible to optimize the device through the pre-installed Game Booster app, where it is possible to manage some parameters, such as the screen refresh rate during playback. some games.

Camera
Razer Phone is not born as a camera phone, and it shows. Not that the quality of the photos is bad at all, but the software department is absolutely lacking. Just as we were preparing to return the sample sent to us for the review we received an update with support for the bokeh effect, absolutely absent in all these months since launch.
A double module of 12 is available on the back MP each, with f / 1.8 and f / 2.6 aperture. They don't enjoy OIS and the software processing every photo is lacking. In some shots the colors are a bit dull and the exposure tends to be lacking as well. Portrait effect shots are dull at all slow, and the result does not exceed the sufficiency: the edges of the subject in the foreground are clearly visible, as if only a software effect had been applied to the photo. We leave the reader to judge by presenting a photo gallery taken directly with the terminal.
Software
Positive note the software: why waste time creating a custom launcher, when it is possible to integrate one of the best available on Google Play? We like Razer's reasoning, which has well thought of integrating Nova Launcher, as the launcher of
default system.
Nova Launcher carries all the customization options that fans of the app have come to know over the years, with the ability to change themes, icons, and to make the Home as close to their wishes.
Conclusions
The Razer Phone, of course, will have to be primarily taken into consideration by the gaming audience. If you are not interested in the gaming department there are not many reasons to buy it. It is not a mystery, after all it is the first gaming phone par excellence. It warms up a bit with heavier games, but overall offers top-of-the-line performance. Paradoxically, the very high refresh of the display is really pleasant even when browsing the UI of the smartphone, or scrolling on web pages.
On Amazon you can buy it for 729 euros, while on the official website it costs 749.99 euros.
