Realme has now invaded the market, including the Italian one, with its devices with a very high quality / price ratio. We met the brand with X50 Pro 5G, which today eliminates the suffix “pro”, to provide the user with a terminal with outstanding features, such as 5G and a 120 Hz display, without weighing too much on the wallet. Here's what we think in our review.
Aesthetically level realme X50 5G looks a lot like the previous “Pro” version, but even more winks at the company's Superzoom. The feeling, in short, is that of deja vù, not finding ourselves in front of such an original terminal from an aesthetic point of view. The front is always almost entirely occupied by the display, which is interrupted only by the double front chamber positioned in the upper left corner, as is now customary for the brand. This time there is no Touch ID under the screen, which instead is moved to the side, inserted inside the large standby / power button.
The headphone jack is missing, a shame considering that the terminal is not that thin anyway, while the USB-C port is present on the bottom, which allows and supports fast charging at 30W. This certainly does not reach the peak speeds of the X50 Pro model, but it allows you to recharge the terminal with times below the average of today's smartphones. On the opposite side to the one where the fingerprint sensor is positioned, instead, the volume rocker. Nothing else, the smartphone is really clean and with minimal lines. Too bad for the weight, of 202 grams, which are felt, even if slightly less than the Pro variant.
Data sheet
The device offers some characteristics that are certainly “out of place” for a medium range. Starting from the display, which offers a refresh of 120 Hz, a feature that is not even found on all the top of the range today. We anticipate right away that the 120Hz refresh makes the use of the contents truly impeccable, with a crazy fluidity, even when browsing the menus. By default the automatic refresh is enabled, which varies between 60 and 120 Hz, but the user can also choose to enable the permanent 120Hz, negatively affecting the autonomy, which however remains very high.
Below is the technical data sheet:
The data sheet is that of a good medium range, very well equipped. And infected in everyday use, there is no perception of using a non-top-of-the-range smartphone. The differences are slightly noticeable when you combine it, for example, with the Pro model, but in everyday use this X50 5g certainly does not make you want more expensive smartphones. The user experience, thanks to the 120 Hz display refresh is absolutely fluid, never a lag or a delay, not even in switching from one app to another, or while browsing. The model we tested, however, offers 8GB RAM, which certainly helps in multitasking, offering maximum responsiveness.
This realme X50 5G offers, as anticipated, a “only” IPS display. The difference, always side by side, with the AMOLED screen version of the Pro model can be seen, but in everyday use even this panel of the cheaper model is absolutely valid. Very high brightness, excellent readability even under the sun. Having to be extremely fussy, there is a slight black cast next to the cutouts of the front camera, but it is something truly unnoticeable. Whites and blacks are still very good, obviously the Always on is missing, which usually only appears on AMOLED devices, while the colors reproduced on the screen are absolutely excellent. Present the dark mode, as well as a grayscale mode to not tire the eyes.
To underline the shortcomings, in addition to the mentioned absence of the headphone jack, also the lack of a notification LED, which would certainly have been convenient, especially for the absence of the Always On. As for the audio department, however, we point out the presence of a single speaker placed on the lower part; in this case, also in consideration of the price, it was not possible to expect a stereo sector.
The materials are absolutely fine. Glass on the back, and metal in the frame that surrounds the device. The touch and feel of the fingerprint sensor is well-made, although not the fastest on the market, it is still fast and precise, definitely worth promoting.
Camera
Even from the multimedia point of view, the terminal is well equipped, and certainly would not suggest a medium range. There are four sensors, with the main one having 48 megapixel and ƒ / 1.8 aperture, flanked by an 8 MP with ƒ / 2.3 wide angle aperture, an additional 2 megapixel ƒ / 2.4 macro sensor and a last 2 megapixel ƒ / 2.4 sensor. for the depth effect, thus enabling Portrait shooting with bokeh effect.
Before leaving you, as always, to a gallery of photos taken with X50 5G, we would like to point out that the smartphone returns good quality photos, both in optimal light conditions, therefore during the day, and also in dark conditions, thanks to the night mode. The shots, in our view, are better by activating the chromatic increase, which is not very invasive, but serves to return more vivid and sunny photos, as long as you like more saturated colors.
The wide-angle photos are slightly sinful, while remaining sufficient, they lose a little detail and tend to show a pastel effect in the background. Good portraits, with a good blur effect, which is also available for selfies, thanks to the double 16 megapixel ƒ / 2.0 camera, flanked precisely by a 2 megapixel sensor.
As for videos, realme X50 5G records in 4K, even if the lack of stabilization is felt. The situation improves significantly in Full HD, with the possibility of shooting at 60 fps. Then there is a mode with ultra stabilization, which however lowers the quality, so much that it is not worth it.
Conclusions
It is the 5G smartphone with the lowest list price on the market. As already mentioned, daily use does not reserve bad surprises, and indeed it will hardly be distinguished from a top-of-the-range smartphone. Good from all points of view and from every department. Too bad for the weight and size, 202 grams with a thickness of 8.9 mm. This is the only price to pay if you want to have a smartphone with the latest technologies on board, starting from 369 euros.
