Samsung has spent months developing a new in-memory computing system that uses MRAM (Magnetoresistive Random Access Memory) chip technology. It is an improved version of DRAM modules that allow data to be stored and processed in the same component. Now, the company has confirmed the first demonstration and the intention to mass-produce this new architecture.
The MRAM architecture offers multiple advantages. Among them, and according to Samsung, the possibility of storing data from the memory network itself, something that allows avoiding the use of external storage components. Also process data in parallel from the same chip, which can reduce power consumption. All this, in addition, taking into account that the MRAM memory is a non-volatile memory. That is, you can store the data even when the device is turned off.
One of the drawbacks of MRAM memory, according to Samsung, is its low resistance. This prevents you from taking advantage of reduced power when running on a standard computing architecture. In this case, Samsung researchers decided to address this problem by devising a new MRAM array chip intended for AI computing.
By introducing MRAM, memory that has already reached commercial-scale production embedded in system semiconductor fabrication, into the realm of in-memory computing, this work pushes the frontier of next-generation low-power AI chip technologies. generation.
Explains Samsung. In the tests, published by the journal Nature and carried out together with the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) and Samsung Electronics Foundry, the company managed to reach 98% accuracy in the classification of handwritten digits and up to 93% accuracy in detecting faces in scenes.
Samsung continues to work on its LPDDR5 DRAM memory
MRAM memories represent an important advance for Samsung. However, the company continues to develop its LPDDR5 DRAM system with up to 64 GB per module, offering up to 1.3 times higher processing performance than the LPDDR5 architecture.
This new RAM memory module will allow Samsung to offer sufficient performance to process artificial intelligence tasks and is designed to be able to process all the information that the metaverse will require. On the other hand, and as confirmed by the company, its use may be intended beyond mobile phones.
