The new Galaxy Fold, the first smartphones with a screen that folds in on itself, were presented Wednesday by Samsung during a series of events organized simultaneously in San Francisco (United States), Seoul (South Korea) and London ( United Kingdom). Samsung also unveiled four versions of the new Galaxy S10, the successor to its most famous and best-selling smartphone model in the world. The new folding device was previewed at the end of 2018 with a prototype: the final version shown on Wednesday will go on sale from May 3 at a price of around 2 thousand euros.
Samsung Galaxy Fold
The new Galaxy Fold is a sort of middle ground between a traditional smartphone and a tablet. When closed it gives the idea of two smartphones stacked one on top of the other, a little narrower and disproportionate than normal.
The Galaxy Fold has two screens: a smaller 4.6-inch one, on its front, and a 7.3-inch one that folds back on itself on the inside. The opening system is a book, with a system to prevent accidental opening.
According to Samsung, the smaller front screen should be used primarily for answering calls and messages, or for using the camera. The larger screen, on the other hand, for surfing, writing apps or video games.
The larger screen allows you to use up to three applications simultaneously, a bit like you do on a normal notebook and some tablets. If you close the screen, the app view is automatically transferred to the smaller front display.
The new Samsung Galaxy Fold works with Android, the Google operating system with which Samsung has collaborated to develop the new features related to the two screens.
Considering the greater space available, those from Samsung have gotten a bit carried away with regard to cameras: there are six of them on the Galaxy Fold. One is on the front, above the smaller screen, two are on the back of the smartphone when closed, and three more are inside, which become active when the larger screen is opened.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold has two batteries, divided into the two parts of the device, in order to power both the smaller and the larger screen.
The new Samsung Galaxy S10
Samsung has presented four versions of its new Galaxy 10, with differences mainly in terms of power and speed. The new S10's screen is AMOLED, it's called Infinity-O and – as the name suggests – has very narrow edges to minimize the bezel around the display.
The screen on the Galaxy S10 is 6.1 inches, while for the Galaxy S10 + it's 6.4 inches and on the Galaxy S10e it's 5.8 inches. The fourth version of the new smartphone is similar to the Galaxy S10, but already has the ability to connect to 5G networks (for now under testing and construction, also in Italy).
On the Galaxy S10 and S10 + there are three cameras with wide angle, telephoto and an “ultra-wide angle” that covers a field of 123 degrees, to make us fit more in the shots. The front camera, on the other hand, has 10 megapixels and is inserted directly into the screen, without more invasive pieces like on the most recent iPhones and other devices.
Under the screen, Samsung has placed a fingerprint reader. The system allows you to unlock the phone without having to enter a code, and without having to press physical keys.
The new Samsung Galaxy S10 will be available starting March 8th. The Galaxy S10 will sell for € 929, the Galaxy S10 + for € 1,029 and the Galaxy S10e for € 779.
