Sitecom USB-C Multiport Pro Dock review: many ports under the MacBook Pro

Since Apple introduced the first MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt ports only, we have had an exponential growth of USB-C HUBs of all kinds, of which this Sitecom USB-C Multiport Pro Dock is an original and practical solution.

Simple and very comfortable, this HUB has the function of adding access doors but also of accommodating the user in a more comfortable posture, which is no small feat.

    All ports available

Out of the box, the HUB is ready, since it does not require power, taking it from the computer to which it is connected.

Aesthetically it is a brushed aluminum wedge with a soft rubber USB-C cable of about 20 cm, and a series of connectors all on one side.

The list of connectors speaks of a VGA port (very old, but still valid in some contexts, especially in some conference rooms) capable of supporting FullHD, two HDMI ports for 4K, an RJ45 Ethernet connector (speed up to Gigabit), three USB-A ports (at 5 Gbps), an SD and Micro SD reader, a USB-C input connector with power up to 100W (therefore able to manage the charge of a 16 “MacBook Pro) and finally, the single on the side, an analog audio jack.

From the constructive point of view, the Sitecom USB-C Multiport Pro Dock has a symmetrical shape, so that you can use the cable indiscriminately on the left or on the right, which for MacBook Pro is the same, but for other computers (different PCs but also MacBook) can make a difference as the USB-C or Thunderbolt connector only fits on one side.

    Comfortable

The HUB appears solid and above all comfortable: on both sides that support the table and the computer there are two black rubber pads that avoid direct contact of the metal with the other surfaces, and once the HUB is positioned, the computer acquires a angle of a few degrees, however, capable of raising the keyboard and screen just enough to make the use of the laptop more comfortable.

The size is equal to a 13 ″ MacBook Pro, but as there are no moving parts, all laptops fit in because the flexible cable is capable of adapting to all uses.

However, it is not suitable for use with a desktop computer: technically it works well, the writer used it for an emergency on a Mac mini 2018, but the cable is too short and is inconvenient on both a Mac mini and an iMac .

    Characteristics

The high number of ports present solves all the connection problems that a user may have in his computer path: the only connection that is missing is the Thunderbolt one, for which the price would rise significantly, but it must be said that for all the others the USB-C connection is more than sufficient.

Considering that the energy supply is greater in a USB-C connection, compared to the more classic USB-A, the use of a MacBook with the HUB is more capable than an old Mac without a HUB (on this point, all 'other than obvious, let's think about those who accuse Apple of forcing users to buy a HUB).

We can connect two or three screens at the same time, two Hard Disks and a USB stick, an SD card and listen to wired headphones. But the real sense of this HUB, although it is perfectly portable (since it does not require power) is that it works very well as a Dock.

By connecting a monitor, keyboard, mouse, audio speakers, external hard drives and an Ethernet cable connection, the laptop acquires, with a single wire, enormous versatility, which transforms it from light on the road to a workstation in the office or at home.

    Considerations

Sitecom USB-C Multiport Pro Dock is not that small, yet it is thin, solid and corner-free enough to fit comfortably in your backpack when traveling, useful for use in a conference room as well as on the train.

Having said that, in our opinion, the ideal position remains in the office or at home, but on the desk, as a Dock for displays and various accessories to be left connected, using the single cable to the computer as a sort of switch (connecting it to the Mac everything turns on, magically).

The cost appears to be just higher than expected: there are cheaper alternatives, but none so ergonomic and very few with this choice of ports available.
