The best protective glasses for iPhone

In the United States, where new behaviors and feelings related to technologies are described and named before elsewhere, there are those who have analyzed the prejudices that people have towards those who for months do not have the cracked screen of their smartphone repaired. If you are afraid of finding yourself in that shameful situation of having your iPhone screen broken and you are not yet equipped with a protective glass, perhaps you are interested in buying one but you don't know which one. Putting together the experiences of the Post editors who own an iPhone and Wirecutter reviews, we've built a little guide that could help you make your choice.

First of all it must be emphasized that the protective glass does not guarantee 100% that your iPhone will not be damaged by falling or bumping into something, also because more than half of the smartphones with a broken screen are damaged by hitting something on a corner, i.e. on a point that cannot be protected with glass. However, protective glasses are not useless, because by putting an extra layer between the smartphone screen and any obstacles they form a small barrier and because they are able to avoid scratches. A scratched screen isn't as annoying as a cracked screen, but already scratched screens crack more easily than undamaged ones.

Having clarified these general aspects, we can distinguish between two types of screen protectors: plastic films and glass films. The latter do their job better, especially when it comes to scratches, which is why we recommend them. Another distinction that can be made is that between films that cost around 10 euros and those that cost around 20. According to Wirecutter, the price difference is not justified by the relative qualities of the different types of protection, so it is worth saving. Among their first choices, TechMatte protective glasses are available in Italian online stores, both for iPhones from 6 to 8 and for iPhone X. On Amazon they cost 6 and 8 euros respectively and there are two in the packs.

For Wirecutter, who verified the quality of twelve types of films by subjecting them to a Mohs test, a method for measuring the hardness of a material, and in this case its resistance to scratching, it is the best protective glass also because it is sold with a kit to clean the screen and apply the glass very easy to use and complete with everything you may need.

The question of application is one of the most critical when it comes to protective screens, especially if you are not very precise when doing manual things. For this reason, the advice of some editors of the Post is to have protective glass placed in an Apple Store or in an Apple authorized reseller, whose employees have machines made specifically to apply protective glass in a precise way. The protective glasses that are sold by default in the Apple Stores are those of Belkin: they are more expensive and – for a choice of the company, aimed at preventing them from lifting along the edges of the screens – they are smaller than the glasses of other brands . This is why Wirecutter does not recommend them.
