The downgrade from fiber to ADSL: it happens in Milan, with Fastweb (updated with replica)

The downgrade from fiber to ADSL is one of those things that does not happen easily, and certainly not anyone who needs a very fast connection desires. Yet this is what will happen in Milan from February 28, 2022 to various users Fastweb , who will be able to navigate to a maximum of 20 Mbit / s with the wind in favor.

Based on the numerous reports collected in recent weeks by DDay, it seems that the network laid at the time by Metroweb (one of the first fibers in Milan) will be discontinued for technical reasons : Fastweb should in fact obligatorily to update it, probably to adapt to more modern requirements, but this update is practically not feasible, and therefore the paradoxical solution is precisely to completely remove the fiber optic connection to the unfortunate customers. In fact, here is what you read in one of the communications sent by the company:

Fastweb has found it impossible to carry out the network update intervention that requires the modification of its access technology necessary to continue using the service.

This is a mandatory technological update intervention to maintain the functionality of the service, consequently on 28/02/2022 Fastweb will have to deactivate its fixed line with numbering

We remind you that Fastweb will be able to guarantee the transfer to another operator of the numbers requested in portability before the expiry of the term indicated above, by 15/02/2022. Any services and / or numbers not subject to transfer will be automatically terminated by 02/28/2022
Finally, we remind you that no costs will be charged for deactivating the service and that deactivated telephone numbers will not be recoverable.

The Fastweb Team

To add further insult to the damage, it seems that many civic adjacent to those that will cease to have the fiber are instead covered by Fibercop and Open Fiber , who during their interventions in the area had ignored the current Fastweb customers because they were already reached by a fiber service, which however will soon cease to function. We therefore hope that an alternative solution can still be found, given that in many cases the fiber of other operators is literally a few meters away, but at the moment everything is silent.

Fastweb for its part has not promised any mitigation of the disservice, if not the free migration to another operator: it is a pity that this involves the inevitable switch to ADSL, as no one else offers fiber solutions to the users involved. There would have been the option FWA , a technology used by Fastweb itself, which, however, is not within everyone's reach and has not, however, been presented as an option to customers “left on their feet” by the fiber.

Let's just hope that this is not the antechamber of other downgrades , given that the Metroweb network is also present in many municipalities in the province of Milan. If you have any experience to report, please do so in the comments area or via our contact form.
