They have been a long time coming, but the official races with electric scooters are just around the corner. The first competition, called eSkootr Championship (eSC, for its acronym in English), will start in 2022. It will be composed of 30 riders who will get on a powerful scooter with the aim of achieving first place .
Specifically, a model capable of reaching 100 Km / h will be used: the eSkootr S1X. This electric scooter is manufactured by the Italian company YCOM. As outstanding features, it has a carbon fiber cover, two 6W power motors and 6.5-inch wheels that will allow it to reach a speed similar to that of a car. Its weight, yes, is nothing more and nothing less than 35 Kg. The electric scooter is designed for racing, so it has some design adjustments to ensure greater stability and prevent a spectacular accident from happening.
For example, the motors of the eSkootr S1X are located on both wheels, dividing the power between them for a better firmness . The speed can also be adjusted via a throttle located on the handlebar. On the other hand, it includes a specific button to quickly increase power, a system widely used in Formula 1 cars.
A former F1 driver will supervise the safety of the first electric scooter race
The eSkootr S1X also has disc brakes on both wheels, as well as a kill switch to suspend power and avoid an accident. Its least strong point is probably autonomy. The scooter has a 1.5 kWh battery, enough capacity for the team to travel up to 1 km for a maximum of 10 minutes, which is how long the race could last.
Regarding the competition and beyond the duration or the distance of the route, the circuit will be completely designed for electric scooters, offering a smooth asphalt, as Wired points out. Alex Wurz, former F1 and Le Mans driver has been appointed by the organizing company “eSC Safety Ambassador”. He will be in charge of supervising the different security measures and the design of the circuit itself to avoid incidents during the race.
