The iPhone 13s are just around the corner. Everything seems to indicate that the new range of Apple phones will be officially presented on September 14 at a completely online event. Of these, however, we have learned various details in recent weeks thanks to reliable sources in the sector.
One of these details is the battery capacity of each iPhone 13 model . The data was revealed by L0vetodream, an anonymous leaker who regularly publishes information about Apple products that have not yet been released. Specifically, said source indicated the following sizes:
iPhone 13 mini: 2,406 mAh (8% more than the iPhone 12 mini, which had 2,227 mAh). iPhone 13: 3,095 mAh (10% more than iPhone 12, which had 2,815 mAh). iPhone 13 Pro: 3,095 mAh (10% more than iPhone 12 Pro, which had 2,815 mAh). iPhone 13 Pro Max: 4,352 mAh (18% more than iPhone 12 Pro Max, which had 3,687 mAh). The increases, if these figures are true, would be between 8% and 18%. And this, added to the foreseeable improvement in energy efficiency of the A15 processor, should translate into better autonomy compared to previous models –especially in the case of the iPhone 13 Pro Max–. However, perhaps we should not get excited so quickly.
The iPhone 13 will have ProMotion and an always-on screen, according to rumors
The latest rumors from sources with a good track record indicate that the iPhone 13 – or at least some of the models – will have two major improvements: always-on displays (always-on) and ProMotion. What do they consist of?
Always-on. It is a technology that we have found for years in phones from other brands, as well as in other products such as the Apple Watch. The operation is quite simple: the iPhone 13 screen will never completely turn off when locked. Certain pixels will remain lit to show the time, as well as other relevant information (weather, notifications, etc.). Promotio n. We learned about this technology many years ago with the iPad Pro, whose screen reaches a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Since then, many mobiles have incorporated it, but Apple, for some reason, has waited until this year to bring it to your phone. How does this benefit the iPhone 13? Simple – it will make all transitions feel much smoother. The panel will also be able to lower its own refresh rate automatically in those moments in which a static image is being shown –where the difference between 1 Hz or 120 Hz is not appreciated–. In this way, the system will keep energy consumption at bay. These two novelties will be possible thanks to the OLED panels , which allow the individual pixels of a screen to be illuminated, and to the LTPO technology . The latter, also present in the Apple Watch, is key to being able to dynamically adapt the refresh rate of the panel.
And what does all this have to do with the battery of the new iPhone 13?
Photo by Tyler Lastovich on Unsplash Simple: the aforementioned news is likely to increase, to a greater or lesser extent, the average power consumption of the phone . If this is confirmed, it is possible that the expected increase in the size of the batteries will mainly serve to compensate for the higher energy demand of the phone, not to extend its autonomy.
To confirm if this is the case, we will have to wait for the official presentation of the iPhone 13, as well as the tests after its launch. It is possible that the increase in the size of the battery is greater than the increase in consumption, which would be good news because they would have a better autonomy. It is also possible that Apple has improved the energy efficiency of another component to compensate for the increased consumption caused by ProMotion and the Always-On system. The variants for this equation are actually multiple. And, although the ideal would be yes, not in all of them a larger battery will equal a better autonomy. It's time to wait until September 14.
