Prev Next 1 of Previous Next After having collected what according to the specialized sites were the best video games of the year just finished, it's time to think about the ones that will arrive in the one just started. It will be a special year, because before Christmas 2020 – in the sense of just before, probably – the new generation consoles of Sony and Microsoft will be released, that is the PlayStation 5 and the new Xbox Series X. But most of the titles that are known will already come out first, and again for previous consoles.
While it's common to see indie video games on the year-end lists, it's hard to find them in the trade press lists of yet-to-be-released titles. Usually, in fact, the smaller games come out a bit on the quiet and then acquire notoriety as the critics and the most impaled users try them and start telling around how beautiful they are. In the list of the most anticipated titles of 2020, therefore, there are substantially large productions, both of acclaimed series sequels and new titles from major manufacturers. It is not certain that they will also be the most beautiful of the year, but for now they are the ones we talk about.
If you like video games, in any case, it is good that you follow Joypad, or “Run, Jump, Shoot”, or the former video game series of the Post that has now become a podcast, also created by Matteo Bordone, Francesco Fossetti and Alessandro Zampini. You can listen to the first episode here, and subscribe on the main podcast platforms to not miss the next ones. They know a lot and tell them well.
Cyberpunk 2077
For PS4, Xbox One, PC, Google Stadia
Release: April 16, 2020
It's perhaps the one most enthusiastically talked about: CD Projekt RED, the home of The Witcher, developed it, and it was first announced nearly eight years ago. One of the main characters is played by Keanu Reeves, which raised expectations. It is set, precisely, in 2077, and revolves around the cyberpunk imaginary, that is, that sub-genre of science fiction about the next and dystopian futures of the Matrix and Blade Runner. It is an open world video game in which you play a mercenary with an arsenal of futuristic weapons and very strange contraptions: the setting is that of a terrible world where inequalities between classes are very deep and multinationals control society.
Ghost of Tsushima
PS4
Release: summer 2020
The protagonist is Phantom, the last samurai in Japan in 1274, during the first Mongol invasion (that of the Kublai Khan): it is an open world video game, you move on horseback and cut enemies with razor sharp swords.
Final Fantasy VII Remake
PS4
Release: March 3, 2020
It is, as the title suggests, the remake of Final Fantasy VII, the best-selling and famous video game of the Japanese series of the same name, released in 1997. The protagonist (the mercenary soldier CloudStrife), the setting (a fictional sci-fi world) and the plot (the struggle of an eco-terrorist organization against an evil society called Shira) are therefore equal. Compared to the original, however, it will be more of a strategy game.
Godfall
PS5, PC
Late 2020
It will be released at the end of the year and therefore in all probability directly for the PlayStation 5, which Sony should put on the market by Christmas. Not much is known yet, except that it is a very hot and epic fantasy with giant monsters and divinity-like warriors inside. It is expected above all because as far as we know it will be one of the first flagship titles of the new console.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Nintendo Switch
Release: March 20, 2020
The Animal Crossing series is one of the most popular ever among Nintendo ones, and is based on a very simple yet very effective plot: you play the inhabitant of a village full of anthropomorphic animals, and you pass the time – which flows like the time of the real world – doing odd jobs, small missions and various activities. This is the first title to come out for the Nintendo Switch.
Marvel's Avengers
PS4, Xbox Bone, PC, Google Stadia
Release: May 15, 2020
It is the first true Avengers game to come out in recent years in which Marvel's team of superheroes starred in the most commercially successful film series in film history. However, the characters are different from the actors, which could be confusing for some. Otherwise, it should be exactly what you expect from an Avengers video game: so maybe not something for those with very sophisticated tastes, but who knows.
The Last of Us 2
PS4
Release: May 29, 2020
The other most anticipated title on this list, for sure. It is the sequel to one of the most beloved and celebrated video games ever, released in 2013 for PlayStation 3. The first is considered one of the best audiovisual products of the horror and post-apocalyptic genre ever made, for its playability but also and above all for a screenplay. deep and exciting. The second chapter features Elle, the girl who had co-starred in the first, and is set five years later. It is not an open world video game, but it proceeds by following the story and killing the enemies, which are zombies, mutant creatures and hostile humans.
Halo: Infinite
Xbox One, PC and new Xbox console
Release: late 2020
The latest installment of Microsoft's famous science fiction video game series will also be released for the new Xbox console, which should be released at the same time as the PS5. The story will always be the same: star wars between humans and aliens.
Watch Dogs: Legion
PS4, PS5, Xbox One, new Xbox, PC, Google Stadia
Release: late 2020
It is the third installment of the Watch Dogs series, which began in 2014: this is set in London, and aims to build a resistance to fight an authoritarian regime that has taken over the United Kingdom. As always, everything is focused on information technology and close combat.
Doom Eternal
PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, Google Stadia
Release: March 20, 2020
What you expect from a trailer that begins with a monster having his head sawn in two. It is the latest title in a very popular butcher shooter series of scary demonic creatures, set on this Earth tour following the events of Doom in 2016.
